She is absolutely gorgeous! Such a cute little hamster!

I'm so happy for her that she found a great home!

She is absolutely adorable. What a face!

Do you have any advice on how to help a hamster get over its skittishness? Ours is absolutely terrified (it didn't help that we had a bunch of noisy kids over at our house for New Year's - they left him alone, but they were loud). We have only had him a couple of weeks, but he is still absolutely terrified. What did you do to help yours along?

Thanks,
Yes, you are probably right, I am sure noisy kids won't have helped.
I just start slowly by talking to them at the cage door. maybe offering food through the bar, working up to putting my hand in the cage, then with food on. Always watching the hamster so it doesn't get chance to nibble my fingers/hand.
Once this seems to be going well, I also leave the cage door down to see if they are interested in coming out to explore. If they are, and they are still quite squirmy/jumpy at first I use a jug to transfer them (this gets rid of chances of dropping the hamster if they squirm out of your hands) from their cage to either the bath or a big box which has toys in. You can normally feel the hamster tense up in your hands, when it gets used to you I find this no longer happens. I work with a hamster in a big box so they can get used to interacting with my hands/arms.
With the bath, I actually get in with them, so they get used to climbing all over me and know that I am safe and won't hurt them. It can take weeks or a couple of months, depending on the hamsters nature and background. Sometimes it can take days, just depends.
I have done a couple of videos on this, but Sunny just died so I won't be releasing them on YouTube, but if you are interested I am happy to send a private message with a link to the unlisted videos if that will help you.

Thank you, Luna. Pencil is in an aquarium, but otherwise, that seems to be exactly my plan. My hamster Teddy was pretty much tame by the get go, so I just need to learn how to be patient. I'm glad to hear yours was successful! I would love to see the video! I am so sorry about Sunny.

Patience is key sometimes, but it can be so hard, but worth it when it starts to pay off

I sent you a message with the links.

Thanks re Sunny, it's nice to know her videos haven't been wasted, even if they just help one person.

Just thought I would share 2 new photos of my old girl Star pretending to be a ladybird (it's really a strawberry)

Star as ladybird forum.jpg

star ladybird 2 forum .jpg

I got it for her 11 month gotcha anniversary as I didn't think she would last another month to make it a year.

Having said that, if she lasts another 15 days I will have had her a year, not bad as me and the rescue thought I would only have her for a few months due to her old age already when I adopted her. She is one tough cookie.

She seems to have 1 or 2 nights a week where she wants to be out and exploring, on those nights I take her out several times for just 5 mins at a time. Other times she is just up for food and a quick wander.

Aww, Star looks so cute and content.
Do you know, compared to Star our 1.5yr old Henry behaves like a geriatric. Star coming out twice a week would exhaust our lazy Syrian just considering it.
I think Star is pretty fit and looks very well for an old lady.
Now you have to buy her another present in 15 days, serves you right, lol. Love that ceramic strawberry hide and so does Star by the looks of it.

Star is so lovely and it sounds like you both lucky to have found each other. I look forward to hearing what her 15 day present is! X

Well she doesn't eat much these days, but I have got some wooden chew sticks for her to try and some other treat from zooplus. To be honest, Twinkle will probably end up with them. Following the discussion on the other thread re treats I may make some muffins without the bicarb soda and give her some of that, I bet she will eat that.
