He'll come round. I get the monkey nuts, peanuts in der shell and crack it a little bit then Henry does the rest. Same with sunflower seeds, i get them in their shell too and hear Henry cracking them open and scrunching in his coconut. Bloody coconut, lol. He always sits in that thing! Henry is an elusive hamster too, always has been.
The camera will be really helpful to observe Ragna at night.
I'm just in from work at 08.00 and opened Henry's small roof to give him his leaf and check he's ok. This time i wasn't faced by a set of balls but a wide open yawning mouth. He woke because he heard me and thought of a nice treat, no doubt.

Does Ragna live underground like a mole or does he sleep in his house now? Maybe he is still scared and hiding away for now. That will change once he's brave enough to accept human contact.

Personally I wouldn't disturb him during the day. Until Luna got ill and I have had to wake her up to give the medicine to her and check that she was still with us, I have never disturbed her when she was asleep. I see it as her place to feel 100% safe. You could always leave the treat outside where he is sleeping - they will sniff it out and soon find it.
A tip with the walnut if they don't show much interest in it is to make a tiny hole in the top of it with a corkscrew or something similar.

Thanks for the reasurance Ria and Luna G. Ragna went from being a confirmed Mile and burrowing at the bottom level of his cage to building a tunnel up to his house. He is now under his house. He isn't using the toilet but the Fitch and megazorb are doing a great job and it's not smelling. Im scattering his food every 3 days as I noticed he isn't eating them all up. I lift his lid daily to check if he has used his toilet them replace it. I won't disturb him or try and entice him with treats until he starts eating all his food.

I just checked and it's only been 6 days. I thought it was longer. We have moved his cage into a corner where it's darker and less traffic. We did that yesterday.

As you say it's a case of being patient and remembering the hell he came from. I tell myself he is loving burrowing and being a hamster so that brings me peace. I hope he is! Lol! We go to bed around 9pm as we have a baby to get for and he hasn't come out yet. I hope he will come out earlier in the evenings so we can spend time with him.

I think the natural hamster instincts will take over once Ragna realizes that nothing bad is going to happen to him now and he will make a nest in his house or somewhere above ground. Until now he never had a chance to be a proper hamster and doesn't really know the joys of hamster life. Must be like a whole new world to him, his age is a bit of a guess and you don't know his personality yet. So so much to learn yet for Ragna and you. You saved that little fella.

We all have slightly different opinions about feeding, treats etc. I guess that i'm a bit too relaxed and throw leftover food out then replace with fresh hamster mix daily. Henry prefers fresh food so gets a bit of veg daily which he always eats. Yes, i spoil him, he eats what he likes and i'm not fussed if he doesn't eat all his mix. I also don't feel that i disturb him when i open the small section of his roof. I don't wake him on purpose but usually a nose appears looking for a leaf.

I was thinking of his life before so got him. The same lot of hamsters were in that area when a I joined the forum about a month ago. Judging by his size he must be over 6 months and must have been at the petshop for at least 3 months. Imagine living in that bright area with lots of other hamsters and shavings not think enough to cover your head. It must have been hell. You’re right in saying that he must be enjoying living out his instincts.

I had a very serious convo with Ragna addressing the lid of his house...no idea if he is even in that area😂😂😂😂. I told him that if he behaved bravely and lived in his house and used his toilet I would buy him a detolf cage😂😂😂😂.

Oh hell, nearly spilled my coffee laughing about you talking to Ragna's house lid!!
Ragna is a man not a boy so may well do his own thing anyway.
Personally, i prefer barred cages because it makes interacting easier, hamster can climb if he wants to, sniff his sourroundings, look out and listen, easier to add enrichments
etc etc. Don't forget Ragna used to live in a glass tank and may enjoy the air flow and freedom of his current cage which i think is a great home for him.
That's my personal opinion of course.
If you do get a detolf, i'd keep this cage in case he prefers it and if he likes the detolf better you got space for another hamster. I keep looking at my Ikea coffee table wondering if i could fit a tank in it for a Robo......stop it Ria.

Hahahahaha...you make me laugh!! I never thought of it like that. He may love the freedom of the airflow like you said. That petshop was quite stuffy so it must have been quite hot in there. I have placed a small bowl on top of his house with his food in it so I can monitor what he is eating. I also moved his whimzee next to it. I was going to mention the man thing but thought that maybe sensitive readers might get offended...lol! I’m hoping I might see him tonight. My husband reasons he has escaped and is living under the bed - that is not possible and I told him to come up with more imaginative reasons. He said he would let me know.🙄🙄

Henry just came sniffing out of his house at 20.30! and followed his nose to his fresh food dish because there was half a cherry. He didn't even pouch it but carried it between his teeth back to his bed which looked quite comical.
I'd leave something tempting and new out for Ragna aside from his regular food. A tiny piece of cucumber or carrot or fruit or cheese. It may well be gone in the morning.
Hamsters love new things.
