If you could find an unwanted hamster to adopt that would solve the issue of not wanting to support petshops.
Are there animal rescue centres where you live?

I couldn't find a breeder locally when i wanted to get a hamster and it had never ocurred to me to check the small ads for unwanted hamsters or i would have adopted one. I found out and joined HC after buying my hamster.

The small independent pet shop houses them in bigger display cabinets but it was closed that day. Patience was never my forte so i went straight to pets@home shop which had loads of hamsters.

What really gets me is the tiny cages petshops are allowed to sell! There should be a law against it and i don't understand why the RSPCA doesn't do anything about it.
Rant over and sorry for the outburst.

I am on the lookout and hope that someone will post an advert. I totally agree...I guess selling bigger cages costs more and takes up more space and people can't sell hamsters in mass that way. It's very upsetting and the RSPCA should do something about it.

Keeping myself busy....
Ragna's DIY travel box

1x Tupperware...you choose the size
Sharp knife or sturdy scapel blade
Insulation tape
Chicken mesh

Please don't attempt this if you are a child or are very accident prone without a responsible adult helping you.

Looking forward to bringing my boy home in this.

Two weeks ago or so I found an advert on a website that posts pets looking for homes in Saudi. I messaged the person and only got a response now. He has a mother and 3 babies. Two female and one male. He says the babies are about 3 months old. He sent me pictures of the hamsters and the pictures left me cold. They are all in a small cage with no bedding and nothing accept food and droppings on the floor. There is a water feeder. They are Syrians and look golden.

None of my orders have arrived. I am sitting with an empty cage and my DIY house I made out of a shoebox. Do I go to the pet shop and buy shavings that could not be aspen and buy the local brand food here and use that till my orders arrive in the next two weeks or do I wait until all my things come and go to a pet shop for a hamster. I could also wait and then message this person again when my cage is set up and maybe he will still have the hamster but the thought of my hamster - if I had to choose it - being stuck there until then would haunt me.

Is this Ragna waiting to be saved or should I wait to find my Ragna the pet shop? I have no idea what health condition they are in and if I took this hamster I would take my driver and husband with me and meet in a public place and there would be no time really to umm and aww...no time to look at the hamster. It would be an exchange by the side of a vehicle - no coffee and chat in the comfort of their home peering into a detolf sized cage at happy, healthy hamster babies.

I said I would let this person know tomorrow.

OMG that is not an easy decision to make, i would save every hamster if i could. It is very dubious meeting someone like that - but then again i can understand why you would be wary of going to someone's house, but was it him that suggested meeting in a public place?

Don't think personal safety is so much the issue here because you would have your husband and driver with you.

The sensible thing would be to wait until all your hamster things arrive then set up your cage before you get a hamster.
Like Luna says, we all would like to save every hamster.

I honestly don't know what i would do though, save this particular hamster who you haven't seen and who could be ill for all you know or save one from the petshop a bit later. Whatever you'll decide to do, you will be saving a hamster and not just buying him.

Ria P - it wasn't just safety I was worried about, it was more if you can't go to someone's house to see what conditions the hamsters are living in - then obviously that sets off alarm bells. But then Schwartzie already knows what horrible conditions they are in, so maybe that doesn't make a difference. The horrible thing is if you are paying money to these people to get a hamster and rescue it you are just keeping the endless cycle going. There is no win win in this situation. All you can do is choose 1 hamster to rescue. It's a hard decision.

Luna, yes i know what you mean, it really is a no win situation. I hope Schwartzie will let us know what she decided to do in the end. I have no idea what i would have done myself in this 50/50 situation: follow my brain and wait till the cage is set up and get a petshop hamster i can at least give a check over or follow my heart and rescue a hamster in need without being able to check for health issues etc. I guess, i may have followed my brain......??
Schwartzie, i hope that you are ok.
