This was a fun thread to read. I feel your excitement!

I have to admit to being delighted, too, that you're 61 because the age factor comes up a lot with me having a hamster in middle age and comments about having a "real pet". Those of us who enjoy hamsters know they are real pets and great pets for adults.

Looking forward to hearing about your new little one when you have him.

There are lots of us who are adults and own hamsters. I know right...it's so weird how people say that! Can't wait for my boy to arrive!

Lol! The hamster makes me feel young again. It's like playing "houses" sometimes, trying to arrange his home so he likes it. I get so excited when i see him investigating and liking something new. I watched him sniffing his way up to his new, suspended wicker tunnel, first he nibbled it to check the material i guess then sat in it and had a wash.
So you want a male Syrian and he's called Ragna. Do you fancy a smooth or long haired one, light coloured or dark one or multicoloured or will you decide on the day?
I spent days looking at hamsters and liked the look of one with a brown face banded cream who turned out to be female but i wanted a boy. Then i saw the little grey boy who was desperate to get out of the glass tank and the rest is history.....

You are going to have so much fun and we want to be part of it expecting regular updates and photos!

I also can't wait to see what Ragna does with his cage set up. I'm in two minds...I know I want a long haired Syrian...not teddy bear long but long like I saw at the Petshop. I am umming and awwing about the colour combinations. I don't know if I want black and white or multicoloured. Male is the only option...hahaha!

I wanted to ask everyone's advice...

I have been scanning the adverts posted in the area I live relating to adopting and animals and the hamsters available were already adopted or the people advertising couldn't speak English. I wanted to avoid petshops or souqs (animal markets) at all costs. I know one is giving the hamster a good home but one is supporting these set ups.

Has anyone ever been to a South East Asian or Middle Eastern animal souq(market)? It's something you wouldn't believe unless you witnessed it for yourself. There is a market in Bangkok Thailand called Chatuchak which is a market selling anything and everything and is something like 5 football fields big. In a big portion of this market is the animal section. You have never seen anything like it in your life!

I have tracked down an animal souq in my area. You can buy lions, monkeys, crocodiles, flying squirrels and I have no doubt masses of hamsters. Do I take the notion of going to this souq in the baking heat of the desert summer and save a soul or do I stick to the Petshop and save a soul there?

What does everyone think?

No! Don't go to an animal souq, it would haunt your dreams.
Any petshop hamster is a saved soul after living in a tiny, shared space with bright lights and people constantly interrupting their sleep....no wonder my Henry is a bit grumpy and likes his own company.

I love my sleep...I would loose my mind if my sleep was interrupted. Ok, will stick to the Petshop I've been to. Feel sorry for those poor animals...wish I could help them all.
