Default Buying a Syrian from a petshop

Hi everyone,

I went to the Petshop today and was informed that they only stock Syrian hamsters. I must admit that I was shocked to see how big they are. I had one as a child but forgot how big they are. No wonder you need such big cages/bins for them. They had about 30 syrians in a glass area and it broke my heart to see them trying to sleep with no shelter. I understand why there isn't shelters...potential buyers won't see them otherwise...still was sad to see. I noticed that some had longer coats than others and when I asked if there were different coat types I was met with one word...Syrian...that was it. There was a variety of color and I asked how old they were because they were big. They were about the size of my palm and I was told 3 months. Is this a good age to take home? What about disease? How can I try gage which one is healthy if they all want to sleep and huddle?

Out of respect for the country we are expats in, my focus is not on judging or commenting on the conditions the hamsters are in but on how I can make a responsible decision on taking a hamster home that will be healthy to enjoy being part of our family. I mentioned the glass area because it was difficult to gage active and healthy hamsters because they were huddled together in clumps.

Any advice would really be appreciated.
