Sorry to hear about your awful year, Rads, and having to worry about Poppy on top of it all. I hope she'll be okay and can be a happy little senior citizen for a while longer. A big girl with a big personality! I've enjoyed reading about her. Good luck with everything.

Thanks very much, Poppy is plodding on as a Granny Ham, she has lost some weight and can still dig and make her super mega nests I don't often see her out she potters out to the loo and takes some food back to her home and that's about it, I check on her a couple of times a day and that's about it.

Hello All,
This morning I found Poppy part way out of her nest /house at first I thought she was gone, but she was still alive, though I do think it is very near the end of her life.
When I checked on her she was cold , not like her at all and her little paws where almost white instead of pink.
Her breathing is quite short and fast, I cradled her for a while and that seemed to perk her up a little, so I have put her back in her nest and covered her over thickly with bedding, I have also popped a hot water bottle under her cage so am hoping that the warmth permeates through.
Our vet is open on restricted timings only but as she doesn't seem to be in distress I'm not going to have her pts I would rather she pass in her own nest if that is the case, she has been slowing down over the last few months ,and I'm guessing she is knocking on the door of two years of age aswell which is about the average lifespan of a syrian hamster.

Rads, i am so sorry to hear this but i wouldn't take her to the vet either.
She's comfortable in her nest and with people who love her, preparing for her journey to the rainbow bridge.

Had Poppy out of her cage while I made some adaptations to it.
I had her on a warm hot water bottle and then resting on me, the thing that I noticed with her, is I think she has had a Neurological event as her back legs are not moving correctly and she seems to struggle a lot with them.
I tried her with some cucumber for hydration she did lick that, and I have tried her with a small slice of apple which she took inside her house.
But she is often lying with her head outside her nest and she is always cold and doesn't respond very much to being warmed.

She may well have had a stroke and its probably too early to say whether she's going to recover from it or not.

I doubt that a vet could help her but i really don't know.
Given her age, i'd make her as comfortable as possible and let nature take its course. As long as she's not in pain her nest is the best place for her.

Poppy is such a beautiful and larger than life character and i can see her in my mind racing around like a tornado in one of your videos.

I hope that you're able to spend some more quality time with her.

Hi Ria,
I have booked a vets appointment for Poppy for Monday afternoon.

She has stayed put in her nest curled up at least she hasn't been flopped out of her nest ,until I took her out to check her over again I found her back end to be very dirty, but not Wet tail and no other discharge, I think she hasn't been able to clean her self properly, so I cleaned her up tonight which she didn't like .
Stripped out her nest completely cleaned it all out, replaced with fresh wood shavings and tore up lots of fresh nesting material for.
When she went back to her cage she tried eating some of her dry food and I put some more fresh apple in her nest and some corn on the cob niblets so she will stay hydrated, there is also a bowl of water by her food as she isn't a fan of a drinking bottle and has been staying hydrated from the daily fresh foods I have always given her.
Weighed her also and she is 255g but you can she she isn't right this what makes me think she may have an infection of some sort?
That's about it so far.
Thank you so much for your concern, it means a lot in these dark times.

I hope the vet can give some answers. It does sound like she may be preparing to go. Soiling themselves can be a sign, also leaving the nest or part out of it. Moo was like that recently. Sometimes they try to go but have a strong heart. It’s always a difficult call whether to leave them in peace or take them to the vet to see if it is something treatable. Just go with your gut feeling. Does your vet do phone/video consultations? Mine asked me to send an email and photos then a phone consultation and was able to prescribe Metacam without me taking him anywhere. At the very least a vet could prescribe Metacam in case she has any pain.

What I have found a couple of times is that if left they become unconscious before they go - but each situation varies. When unconscious they don’t move, seem to be sleeping but breathing fast and don’t react to touch. With Moo he came out for his soft food each night but did nothing else. Until the morning the food was still there. Such a hard time.

Checked on Poppy this morning, I really thought she had gone, I had cleaned out her nest area last night wiped it down etc and remade it with fresh wood flakes and lots of torn up loo roll.
She was a curled up ball in the middle of it all, no signs of breathing at all I thought oh bugger, I touched her she was cool to the touch and then 10 secs later she sprang to life, damn weird, for the looks of being gone....

She seems perkier too now, gave her another mini slice of apple she got up and had a slow tottering wander in her cage I found normal well formed poo in her nest aswell.
She went back to bed and 5 mins later I could hear her scratching about re making her bed.

I have decided not to take her to the vets as it is about a half hour away and don't want to distress her unduly, she isn't in any pain or discomfort and her back end (legs) appear almost normal.

She seems quite the little fighter with an awful lot of spirit and determination, well that is Poppy all over.
She is warm and comfortable and I give her some fresh food two or three times a day which I put right nest to her so she doesn't have to move.

Ah Poppy! That's the spirit. Maybe she's trying to tell you, no thanks, i don't need a vet.

I was in a similar situation with elderly Robo Gordon lately. Hadn't seen him for a while, food was untouched so decided to dig him out and was convinced that he was on his way out when i found him. He perked up again next day and now runs around rather than staggers about aimlessy like he did for a while. No idea what's going on aside from old age but it's not something a vet could fix and as long as he's not showing signs of pain i'll leave him undisturbed.
