I know it's unfortunate, but if your mum is scared of animals then maybe you shouldn't get a hamster. You have to respect her and the rules she has put in place. If there is some way you can convince her that animals aren't all that bad though, then I would try to get a hamster. But first you need her to accept animals for her to even consider getting one as a pet. I would recommend showing them a cute YouTube video or something similar. If you have a friend who has a pet, get them to talk about their experience. Good luck.

Sometimes when a mom or dad are afraid of animals it's because they never had pets or they were frightened by one. It's important for Mom and Dad to want the hamster, too, because sometimes you may need them to help you take care of it, especially if you have school and homework. It's hard for someone to stop being afraid just because someone else isn't afraid. Is there another pet your mom might let you have, such as a betta with a marimo moss ball in a 2-gallon tank (minimum) or an aquatic African dwarf frog in a 3-gallon tank (minimum). Those frogs are cute and funny. I see you're from Asia. I read that in some parts of Asia, there is something called an orchid praying mantis. That would be a very beautiful pet to have if they are available in stores in your area. Your mother might not be afraid of that because it looks like a flower. Good luck! I hope you have a pet soon.

Eek I would be terrified of a Praying Mantis lol! That is sad if your Mom is afraid of animals. I would second showing her some cute videos of hamsters. You could also say that you would do all the care for the hamster, and the hamster would only ever be in its cage or in your room if out of the cage.

First thing though is do loads of research - so if you do get one, you get everything right before getting the hamster. Lots of people make mistakes and aren't prepared as pet shops give bad info sometimes - partly because they don't know much about hamsters, or because they are in the business of selling cages (whether suitable or not).

So you need to think about where you would keep a hamster, would you have enough space for a large cage (at least 80cm by 50cm continuous floor space- ie in one cage space). If you can afford a cage big enough, or whether you would need to make a bin cage or a diy cage. And whether you'd have enough time to care for the hamster and give it enough attention etc. Which I'm sure you have.

Getting the cage and wheel right are important though. Syrian hamsters need a safe wheel with a solid running surface, of about 11" diameter - so a cage needs to be tall enough to fit that, but not too tall or it can have injury risks from falls as hamsters can climb right to the top and then drop (they're not good at climbing down).

Do you know why your Mum is afraid of animals? Maybe you could talk to her about that and ask her to explain to you. It may be she was once bitten by an animal as a child or something. You could say that hamsters are only very small and that they bond with a human owner and are clean little things who wash themselves and will use a litter tray, and very amusing to watch. And then show her some videos.

Have you thought about what kind of hamster you want? A Syrian is often easier for a first time owner, as they can be easier to handle and tame and less likely to get injured (big generalisation there but a Syrian is often recommended for a new owner). Dwarf hamsters are very tiny and it can be nerve-wracking for a new owner.

Your Mum may also be worried that you'll get bored quickly and she will end up having to look after the hamster!

My other half didn't want us to have a hamster either - he is scared of rats and said hamsters were a bit like rats. He doesn't think that now and likes our hamsters He still won't let us have a pet rat though haha!

I think you need to be a little bit patient and win your Mum over to the idea - and be prepared to do all the care yourself.

It's hard to give advice with so little information about your mum's reasons for saying no. And I don't think there is any good advice that hasn't been given.

I will say that if it's an irrational fear then there's very little you can do about it and your mum deserves not to be made uncomfortable in her home. If she just has some misconceptions then you can try and educate her and I agree that youtube is a good source, I'm sure you have your favourites. It is important to stay respectful though and don't get pushy.

What does your Dad suggest? He may be able to talk her round to the idea.

Do you know what it is about hamsters that your mum is afraid of?

Some people's rodent phobias come from a fear of their skittishness or their fast movements in which case it may be beneficial to explain how Syrian hamsters tend to be less skittish and fast moving than the dwarf species but if it's a fear based on biting, then a Syrians bite can hurt more than a Dwarf's bite (I have been on the recieving end of both).

I have to say that persuading someone ith a phobia is not always an easy task as they themselves have to want to overcome that phobia or be ready to do so. I was terrified of dogs as a young child despite people's attempts to familiarise me with them but until I was in a place to allow that to happen it didn't get anywhere. I've overcome my phobia with dogs but I'm still afraid of horses and no amount of showing me photos or videos of horses will change that at the moment.

I think you may need to accept your mum's reluctance if your efforts to persuade her do not prove to be successful. You may be able to have a hamster in the future depending on your living arrangements but I think it's worth mentioning that many landlords restrict the types and numbers of pets owned too so it's not just a frustration that is exclusive to living with parents.
