Talking Went in for a Vet appointment...Meet Cocoa!

Hello,

Well as some of you might know it was my Bonnie's (Russian Hybrid) vet appointment yesterday. She had it at the vets inside Pets At Home, as they do a free vet health check with every animal they sell.

So all went fine with that...as I was about to leave Pets At Home, my friend who has worked there for 15 years came over to me and said that she had a hamster that she'd thought I'd like. I really trust my friend because she tries to steer all her customers toward the adoption section and then tells them where to get a decent cage from as well lol.

So I agreed to take a look at the new one. My friend took me to the adoption section and showed me Cocoa, who was originally named Tommy, but when the previous owners bought her back to the store, they found she was female and then named her Cocoa. Cocoa is only 10 weeks old and had only been in the adoption section for a day.

Needless to say...Cocoa is now settling in at home lol.

Cocoa is a lovely soft brown colour with hints of caramel with a little white strip down her chin to her chest. No photos as of yet as need uploading from phone. She seems quite friendly and didn't fuss much during the journey from the shop. I bought an extra carrier as I have previous experience of Syrians in Pets At Home boxes lol. My friend even popped in a few wooden toys and Cocoa's carrot (which she was trying to stuff into her mouth as fast as possible before leaving the store lol).

When I opened the carrier to put her in, Cocoa just strolled out into her new home with no signs of being scared. I made sure that she had all the bedding with her so it was easy to scatter it around the tank. A couple of hours afterwards though, I heard a few loud squeaks when she discovered her sleeping box, but all quiet a few moments later.

I am definitely enjoying caring for both Bonnie (aka Bon-Bon) and Cocoa.

Feels lovely to fill up empty tanks.

Mweekie xx

Congrats! It is so awesome that Cocoa now has found a wonderful, loving home with you, too. I'm sure you are absolutely beaming with happiness at this moment. Coco sounds so adorable and quite the well-adjusted ham, too. I'm glad that she is settling in so well. I'm so happy for you and your two amazing hams. I look forward to getting to know more about darling Cocoa and seeing pics whenever she is settled in more. I'm glad that Bon-Bon's vet visit went so well, too.

Thanks all of you for welcoming Cocoa.

Cocoa has her (free) vet visit tomorrow afternoon.

She seems to have settled in well. I managed to give her a tiny stroke on Saturday, but she has shied away a little bit since then. I know she has only been home 4 days, so I am definitely not rushing things. She took to her new big wooden wheel almost as soon as she got in the tank and has been using it ever since.

I tried her on half a grape yesterday, but I don't think she was that keen on it. I know she likes carrot as she completely finished the one she had on Thursday. I am gradually going to try different fresh fruit/veg and I have successfully managed to transfer her over to Harry Hamster - plus she had a couple of mealworms on Friday. They went down really well. She squeezed her eyes shut whilst eating those lol.

She's currently sleeping in a Felix cat food box at the moment. Going to get her a new house tomorrow (if I can).

It's so nice to hear the patter of tiny paws, rustles and movement back in that tank again

I wonder if you'll make it out of there without another hamster! Haha! I used to be like that! Couldn't pop in without potentially picking up another little furry friend!

Congrats anyway on Bonnie's big little sister! Hope her check goes well. Can't wait to see her. She sounds beautiful. And very lucky!!!

Well Cocoa's vet appointment went really well...and all I came out from the shop was a few little treats for Cocoa - like a new water bottle and food bowl (I managed to break hers this morning lol). I was also thinking about getting both her and Bonnie a sand bath each, but was wondering if the normal Chinchilla sand is still a good thing to get?

Cocoa did get a bit panicked by the whole vet appointment, mainly because I haven't managed to handle her yet and tried to pick her up with some gloves, but in the end the vet managed to coax her into a clear plastic box (same as what happened with Bonnie) and checked her over that way. She's now back home and has completely barricaded herself inside her cardboard box house lol.

Not going to disturb her much over the next few days, just so I can build up a bit more trust with her.

She did take a couple of peas from my hands yesterday and a pumpkin seed when she got home tonight.

Mweekie xx
