Cocoa did get a bit panicked by the whole vet appointment, mainly because I haven't managed to handle her yet and tried to pick her up with some gloves, but in the end the vet managed to coax her into a clear plastic box (same as what happened with Bonnie) and checked her over that way. She's now back home and has completely barricaded herself inside her cardboard box house lol.

Not going to disturb her much over the next few days, just so I can build up a bit more trust with her.

She did take a couple of peas from my hands yesterday and a pumpkin seed when she got home tonight.

Tiny Friends farm Bathing sand is fine, have used that for all our hamsters, I think they still sell it at P@H. If you have a branch of The Range they stock it in their Pet Dept normally.

Cocoa should love it, Ghost uses his sand Bath as his toilet..! Pip used to do the same and roll in the sand too when the pee had dried up....She was quite a madam.

Thanks for the info Rads. I'll get some when I get paid on the 7th April.

Well Cocoa is doing well, although she tends to hide a lot of the time, unless she wants her sunflower hearts and pumpkin seeds evening treat, then she'll come to the corner of the front of the cage and starts scratching at the front vents at the front of the terrarium.

She is also becoming a bit more confident in me and when I open the terrarium, she will try and climb onto my arm and I very gently stroke her back. I doubt it'll take long before she trusts me enough to hold her properly.

Hello - I have some unfortunate news about little Cocoa.

About a month ago, I noticed a large lump on Cocoa's tummy. She was fussing about with it and so I took her to my local vets (who are great with hamsters).

Unfortunately, after a thorough check of the lump, my vet diagnosed Cocoa with a stomach tumour and it was causing her pain and wasn't going to improve. She said that it would be best if Cocoa was put to sleep, but it was my decision.

I didn't want Cocoa to suffer any more and it was obvious that the lump was painful and her life wasn't going to improve with medication etc. so I sadly made the decision and agreed with the vet about sending Cocoa to the Rainbow Bridge. The vet gave me (and Mum) a little time alone with Cocoa whilst she got the injection to allow Cocoa to be free from pain and suffering. It was during these few minutes that Cocoa actually licked my finger - as though agreeing with me about letting her go and giving me a kiss goodbye. A few minutes after the vet gave her the injection - Cocoa slipped peacefully away.

I've also now made the decision not to keep Syrians any more. I am possibly going to get another Russian Dwarf when Bonnie goes, but I'll make that decision when that happens.

Just wanted to update and also post Cocoa's passing.

So sorry to hear about Cocoa, it’s always so hard when something like this happens & you have to help them to the bridge, I’m sure it’s some comfort to know she isn’t suffering but I can imagine how sad it was to say goodbye.
Such a precious moment when she licked your finger, she knew how much she was loved.
Run free & play well at the bridge Cocoa.
