Default Re: What a TROOPER!

Thanks all for the comments and enthusiasm! Trooper seems to be doing well. I have got for him a rotation of toys and tank fixtures that I can swap around every couple of weeks so he doesn't get bored.
I got him a burrow box, a boredom-breaker sleep'n' play cheese, some wood chews, and a sisal treat holder that I've affixed to the tank wall with a suction cup so that he really has to work at it to get the stuff inside of it out and can't just drag it back to his hut to tinker on in private. He seems to really enjoy that!

Trooper takes treats from my fingers and off my palm with no trouble now. He's still reticent to come completely onto my hand, but he has done once or twice. He also allows me to touch him a little bit - He is SO SOFT, it's incredible. I give him a few light strokes with my finger, then pay him for his time with a tidbit of carrot or whatever and the occasional yoghurt drop. I "pay him for his time" any time I need to disturb him for whatever reason, and I think it's working. He's understanding gradually that I'm just some weird-smelling but ultimately harmless presence.

I need to take fitness lessons from Trooper. He goes on that flywheel thing almost every night for hours. I wish I had his endurance!

I'd like to pick him up, but I don't want to rush him or scare him. So far, he's not bitten me once. He gently tested my skin with his teeth once, I assume to figure out whether or not I was alive, and then hasn't ever bothered to do that again. He's a good, gentle boy, and my life is greatly enriched for having him in it even if I can't do a whole lot with him yet. Sometimes it's just nice to give him a bit of carrot and talk about my day.

He's completely severed the attachments between his hut's sisal base and its thatch roof - honestly that's useful because if I need to check on him I can just gently lift the roof off and then replace it. He doesn't seem to mind all that much, especially since I never bother him during the day.

One day I hope I can have the space to make him a big enclosure like the late great Vanilla, of YouTube fame, had.
