Default New Hamster

Hiya

Just thought I'd introduce our new hamster Peanuts. He got wet tail a couple of days after we got him and had to have treatment from a vet but he's a tough little cookie and thankfully he fully recovered

I'm still really unclear about what size wheel to get. The one that came with his cage was too small, then I bought a large Trixie wheel which was too big and didn't fit! Now he has a 7.5 inch running disk. I also bought an 8.5 inch superpet comfort wheel which was perfect but I'm sending it back because it was really noisy and wobbly. Jeez you'd think it would be simple. Apparently Wondent wheels are good but they don't stock them in the UK.

x

Well done Peanuts on getting through wet tail, a little warrior. He's gorgeous!

Yeah those comfort wheels can be seriously noisy, probably get a silent one. They do have wodent wheels (27cm) on rodipet that deliver to the UK (£3.50 delivery so not that expensive) but you'd be better off with a silent runner. https://sugarglidershop.co.uk/produc...nner-12-wheel/
More silent than a wodent wheel and better made. You'll want a 11-12" wheel for a Syrian regardless of which one you choose.

Edit - If the large trixie wheel didn't fit was that because of the height? What cage is he in?

We have a rather large Syrian and we love our 12" silent runner. It truly is silent (all you hear are the pitter patter of his feet, which is very cute) and the 12" is best for all Syrians. With that size, they don't have to arch their backs. I was taken aback at how huge it looked when we first bought it, but Teddy does absolutely fine on it.

Congrats on Peanuts! So glad to hear he pulled through!

Thanks for the replies. I've checked out the links and will have a think about what to go for. It might actually be better to just buy the larger version of his cage and connect both cages up so my Trixie fits as it works out less expensive than buying a new wheel. His cage is 12 inches high so the trixie will fit if it is adjusted and attached to the side but not on the stand - which makes it unstable and noisy. I think it must be the Pets at home medium wire cage

He has an extensive tube tunnel - I'm waiting for some more junctions to arrive so I can elaborate

Do you think this is a suitable set up? TBH I don't think he is going to grow that much due to his shaky start, he's not grown that much since we got him about 5 weeks ago.

Thanks Guys

The P@H cages aren't really suitable for a syrian, even a small one so you might do better to just get another cage, the Barney cage or the Alaska, both from Zooplusare quite a reasonable price & a good size so you'd have no trouble putting your trixie wheel in with lots of enrichment too.
I did see some photos but they seem to have disappeared now (I can see them on my ipad but not on my computer which is a bit weird!) & it doesn't look as though he has much to do in his cage & he does need a lot more substrate, completely fill the base, so he can dig & burrow, you could just use things like bendy bridges to make some hides & things to climb on for him, otherwise have a look around the forum at other peoples cages for more ideas.
He could do with a bigger house too really, the house needs to be on the substrate with no base to it so he can dig down & make a nest rather than it being on a shelf like that.
He may still put on a growing spurt but he probably needs a good size wheel & more enrichment in his cage to keep him active & help build him up along with a good diet including sufficient protein for a young ham, what are you feeding him now?

Unfortunately I have to agree with cypher, those cages simply aren’t big enough as you cannot fit Syrian items in there. Definitely go for the Barney or equivalent sized cage if you can, most Syrians end up requiring more space than an Alaska. The best Syrian cage on the market is probably the eco habitat except it’s out of stock and a little more expensive.

Also external tubes (especially that p@h brand) aren’t the most suitable, they can come apart and hamsters tend to like nesting in them which makes cleaning a nightmare. Could you return the new tubes perhaps? Extending the tubes doesn’t really provide anything extra for hamsters, and connecting cages via tubes doesn’t increase the floor area of the cage as it should be unbroken.

Even though he seems fully recovered I'd keep a close eye on him the next week just to be on the safe side.

Ok, so as luck would have it someone was selling a Barney Super which I picked up last night with loads of accessories for £40 spent the whole morning disinfecting it and setting it up. Thanks for the advice. We're keeping a close eye on his health.
