Default Noodles is here!

Picked him up yesterday, he is such a handsome little man. He slept all the way back home, daughter (6) put him in his cage after a little cuddle and he had a little explore then went straight to bed in the log house, he didn't stir till after 9pm, managed to sit & watch him play on his wheel and explore for a while, offered him a sunflower seed but he turned his back on me, didn't run away and hide just turned around but after I closed the cage again he happily took it & ate it, he was still up at 7am this morning and has moved his cage around plus moved his bed to the house that came with the barney, he must have food in there as we can hear him every now & again, offered him some pumpkin seeds this morning before he went to bed & again he didn't run away he just turned his back & shuffled off. Hopefully he will wake a bit earlier tonight so I can get some photo's of him to show you all! He has taken food because his bowl is half empty! Should we try waking him earlier or do you just leave them to come to on their own?

Congrats!
Noodles sounds lovely & very confident for his first day home.
You can try waking them earlier, best to begin just a little earlier than normal & gradually work up to a suitable time, rustle the substrate gently or make a quiet noise with a food bag.
I would give him a few days to settle first though & then he may begin to come out earlier anyway.

Sounds like he has already settled really well I would start signaling when you are going to feed - we rustle the food in the dish and chat to them and now they do tend to get up when we do that and come out to see what is on offer. With children in the house I do think it is important that you can wake the hamster up for playtime so that they can share time with their pet. A lot of people will encourage their hammy out at breakfast time. Ask the children to eat theirs then they can give the hammy one Cheerio or a teaspoon of Ready Brek - most will be up and waiting for their breakfast once they get the routine!

He does sound to have settled in well - the Barney house is a good size for a nest and a hoard so can see why he chose that.

I wouldn't wake him just now and give him 2 or 3 days to do his own thing, but if you see him offer him a treat through the bars. I find they take the food from the bowl, hoard it and eat from the hoard while in their nest In privacy. Fresh food is maybe irresistable so eaten there and then usually!

If he shows signs of wanting to come out in the first 2 or 3 days then no harm in that but they can get freaked out easily and have set backs so 2 or 3 days is a good idea to leave them alone. It takes about 2 full weeks for them to be fully settled and confident in the cage so ideally no cleaning during that time except emptying a potty after a week maybe or spot cleaning a handful of pee'd on substrate after a week (or longer) if he pees in a place other than the potty. And then move the potty!

And then minimal cleaning for as long as possible! Sorry I'm going on again. As Souffle says making a bit of cage noise at feeding time lets them know it's feeding time and can wake them and feeding around the same time each evening is a good idea. Then they get in the habit of waking at a certain time. When they want to come out can vary with the hamster. Both ours have always gone back to bed with their stash after feeding, but come out again later.

With our last Syrian Charlie he would never have come out at all if i didn't wake him and coax him out. He was a home bod! I found 8pm to 9pm he was quite dopey and easier to handle (or would just curl up and go to sleep!) but very active late at night and very active around 5pm or 6pm. With a 6 year old you want them out earlier than 8pm really so feeding around 6pm might be good.

With our current Syrian Newt he shows he wants to come out regularly - and that tends to be when the food is put out, but he comes out first then goes back and pouches everything after. If he doesn't want to come out that night he just takes the food and goes back in his house. But then sometimes wants to come out later.

So it's partly playing it by ear with the hamster's personality and partly a bit of training

Congrats of Noddle! He sounds very friendly!
I wouldn’t disturb him for the next 3 to 4 days just so he can settle in and become familiar with his cage. During that period of time, you can talk to him softly to get him used to you and your voice. I can’t wait to see pictures of Noodle!

Thanks everyone, he did come out a little earlier last night so we sat & chatted to him, he just kept looking at us but wouldn't come near, he LOVES his wheel - spends ages on it & last nigh we put some mealworms in which he has eaten plus we got him a whimzee which he has nibbled on, he went to bed a lot earlier today too so hopefully he will be up a bit earlier tonight - will give him tonight and then from tomorrow start to try to disturb him a little and try to offer him some food off us. I can't figure out where he is peeing though - no signs at all but there was a poo in his litter tray this morning

I wouldn't worry about where he's peeing just yet, they don't pee much at all & often use different places to begin with before they settle on one spot.
He does sound as though he's settling in really well & I'm sure he'll soon be happy to interact with you.
