Default Tazzie's Thread

I met Tazzie in the adoption section of P@H last night! I forgot to ask how old she is - she's one of the hams who had gone 'past the sell by date' rather than one who had been returned. She's quite a big chunk of a hamster!

Thank goodness I have a carrier - she was through the box within a few minutes of leaving the store.

She had a good go at chewing through the carrier too, I'm glad I have got a sturdy one.

Once home, she explored every inch of the cage. Everything was carefully bitten. She lost not time on getting to grips with her wheel.

She'd had a flying saucer in the pet shop, so it didn't take her long to figure it out, but it took her by surprise that the wheel didn't stop when she stopped.

The girl in the petshop said that Tazzie was always straight up to the cage door when they fed or cleaned her out - so she is not very nervous of people being around, she just hasn't been handled.

Although I intended to just leave her to settle, she does seem to like attention and so we kept popping in to talk to her during the evening. I left my curtains shut to keep the room fairly dark, so I have only got fuzzy photos so far.

She hardly stopped for hours! The way she was thundering in the wheel, I was surprised to see it still in one piece this morning.

I opened the door to put a treat in for her, and she came right over to me and had a bite at the treat, but didn't take it to start with - she seemed to expect me to sit and hold it while she ate it! Then she decided to take it off me.

She was still on the go this morning but at about 7am she decided to dig down into her Fitch - she was tunnelling around for while and although she had gone in and out of her Rodipet house through the front door several times last night, I think she decided to tunnel under it to get inside (I have got it up on stilts). Once in there, she got into the first room and pushed the roof up and down for a while, then settled down - I assume she is still in the house but I'm not sure! She's taken some food and made herself a little stash somewhere anyway.

She's very different to my previous two girls. Her coat looks very thick and she is quite round! Her head is a sort of honey colour and her nose is very pink.

I don't work Wednesdays, so I was hoping I would see her up and about through the day but I think she must have worn herself out last night.

Thanks everyone for welcoming Tazzie!

I have only had a couple of peeps at her today - I heard her scrabbling about in her house this afternoon, so I opened the cage door and rattled the bag of food - and she poked her nose out of her front door. She didn't want to come out though - just grabbed a piece of food that had landed by her door, then ducked back in. I popped a tiny piece of carrot in front of her door, and she grabbed that then disappeared. Just now, I could hear her moving in her house again, so I opened the door and rattled the food bag again - she had a quick peek out and then disappeared, so she is obviously not ready to get up just yet! But she reacted quickly to the noise of the food bag both times - I would like to get her into a routine of waking up at the same time every evening if I can.

But she has certainly been busy today! She spent at least an hour tunnelling this afternoon - I could hear her moving around the cage, and from time to time I could see the Fitch moving. It seems like she is tunnelling out from under the Rodipet house and all around the cage, and I can see that the level of the Fitch is higher than it was, so I guess the tunnels are holding.
It does seem as though she goes back into her house to sleep though.

I have a little video of her chomping her way out of her box on the way home, I was trying to upload it to Flickr so I could share it but it keeps failing. I did manage to get it on facebook so I don't know if this will work - https://www.facebook.com/smokeysdine...9362497558051/

Awww SE, Tazzie looks so cute and is obviously having a fine old time settling into her new home with you. I have the stilts for the Rodipet house but never had the courage to use them! Interesting that Tazzie has chosen to tunnel away underneath the house as it has stilts rather than use the front door. Never use the easy or obvious way...
She sounds a great little character and it will be fun to get to know her here.

Coco ha ha yes hamsters don't like to do anything the easy way do they!

flowerfairy I dread to think what would happen trying to get a hammy home once it's chomped through the box, without a carrier!

cypher she chomped through that box like she had been doing it all the life, it was very impressive.

Well, I scattered some food in her house early yesterday evening, but she was tucked up in bed. Then a little while after I decided to give her a piece of millet spray - my other girls have loved ripping them to bits. I opened the top of the cage to put it in, and got the fright of my life when Tazzie did a flying leap into the centre of the cage! I hadn't realised she was lurking under one of the back shelves. I don't know if I startled her as well, and she was leaping to defend her territory, or whether she just wanted to see what I was doing! She s=certainly didn't run away anyway, but had a look across at the millet, so I bent it down so she could see and she came over and had a little nibble.

She was still out when I went to bed, trying to climb up behind her wheel, she kept peeking out and then ducking back behind the wheel if I went near the cage.

When I got up this morning, I had a look if she had gathered up her food - she had taken everything but the yellow corn flake things. Marty would never ever take those either!

She got up while I was thinking about doing my morning workout - so I didn't end up doing the workout and nearly ended up late for work!

She decided his morning that as she had explored underground yesterday, she would explore as high as she could today.

She also managed to bypass the anti-climbing devices (cardboard) that I installed around the wheel!

She noticed that I had opened the cage door to get some better shots -

And came to say hello!

It looks like she is going to bite me in this picture, but she didn't! Instead she decided to do one of those sudden springs that hamsters are so good out. Luckily the cage is only on a low unit, and I was sitting cross legged in front of it, so she landed on my leg before slithering to the floor. I scooped her up and held her to me - she seemed ok with this, then walked down my arm and did another leap to the floor! At this point I tried to scoop her again - she wiggled out of my hands, so I had to resort to grabbing from above. Again, she didnlt seem overly bothered, but I put her straight back in her cage.

I told her we can have a little bit of out of cage time at the weekend, I want to reinforce my play pen first!

My sister has made her a very tiny omelette which I will give her tonight, She took some sunflower seeds from me this morning so I am hoping she will take the omelette from me too.
