Default Teddy's Thread(y)

Hello all! I introduced him in the Introductions forum, but I wanted to introduce my little Syrian here as well. His name is Teddy and in the attached picture he is serving his finest "Blue Steel" look.

We got him for our nine-year-old son for his birthday and we are loving him so much. He is as sweet as can be, playful and silly. He was tame after one week and lets each of us handle him. The only one who is NOT happy about Teddy is our dog, Scout. She likes to bark at his cage.

I want to make sure we are doing everything right, so I have a few questions if you don't mind me asking:

1. He is in a 20 gallon long aquarium. Is that large enough? He seems to be happy in there with his wheel and bridges.
2. How long should we allocate for "out of cage time?" We have been playing with him out of the cage (mainly in the empty bathtub with a towel on the bottom and lots of toys) for 30-60 minutes each night.
3. Are there any other fun activities you can recommend?

Thank you all so much and I am thrilled to be a part of this forum!

Hello! He looks like a lovely young chap! Beautiful picture of him! Look forward to hearing more about him in future posts.
20 gallon long is about 30x12x12 inches right? So that's about 360 square inches of floor space, which is quite small tbh. It is the very minimum that's recommended. The larger the area, the more space they have to run around, burrow or build nests. I'd personally upgrade him to something bigger! After all, more space usually means happier ham! I'd say something between 20-30 minutes of supervised out cage time is good everyday. Longer works too, but you'd have make sure the has access to water too. Watch out for signs that he wants to go back into the cage, this could involve signs of boredom. The alternative can also happen, if he wants to spend more time outside, he will probably show it to you when you place him back inside the cage. I'll leave the fun activities to others though! I usually give my girl either different sections of my apartment to explore or different toys etc each time.

Teddy looks lovely & sounds like an adorable little guy!
I think most people in the US tend to go for 40gallon tanks for Syrians, a 20 gallon tank is too small really.
You don't need to limit out of cage time, as long as he's enjoying it then give him as long as you like, other than the bath you could make a playpen for him maybe with a bit more space for toys.

Teddy is absolutely adorable and his name really suits him. It’s so lovely to hear that he has settled in well and is comfortable with allowing everyone to handle him.

Hi and welcome to HC! Congrats on getting Teddy, too. He is absolutely adorable, and it is lovely that he is enjoying his outside of the cage playtime with you and your family. He sounds wonderful. I look forward to seeing you around on the forum and hearing about all of Teddy's grand adventures. Have fun.

We are loving that Teddy is a part of our family! We upgraded him to a 40 gallon tank cage and he is much happier. And I bought a dog playpen for him for outside the cage. It's collapsible and folds up nicely to stick under our son's bed. He also likes to play on our screened porch - closely supervised and sans Scout the dog, of course. Here is a pic of our son with Teddy Bear!
