Wallace's Thread
Wallace is a 16 week old Syrian I adopted from Pets at Home. His previous owner became bored of him about a month after purchase so bought him back to the shop. He had been there since the beginning of April. He is not tame in the slightest. I adopted him on May 1st.
I had to open his cage for the first time today to replenish his food. He was awake when I did it, and did not move a muscle the entire time my hands were in his space. I did it as quickly as possible and he had vanished by the time I got back from refilling his water bottle.
He has two beds at opposite corners at the moment and a lovely pile of poos on the lower platform of his cage. I'm getting the impression neatness is not the little guy's strong suit.
I still don't think he's pouched or stored any food yet. He just scatters it all over the platform when he feels like eating. The poo platform. Kitchen and toilet, apparently. Delightful.
He is very cute. I don't think he'll be paying me too many complements at the moment!

Re: Wallace's Thread
Wallace definitely doesn't seem to have neatness on his mind at the moment, lol. Maybe he will realize that it is best to keep the kitchen and toilet separate is much more appealing soon. He certainly is one silly and handsome ham.

Re: Wallace's Thread
It looks like your first few weeks are a bit rocky, lol. In my opinion, the scruffy ones are the cutest! Can't wait to see pictures when you gain a bit more trust

Re: Wallace's Thread
Silly and messy definitely sum him up, Dreamtree. And yeah SimonandSyril, things are off to a rocky start. He refused to come out of his bed while I was in the room last night. Oh well! I can see the evidence of his adventures, namely in yet more food scattered over the platform...

Re: Wallace's Thread
Wallace seems to have settled into his new home. I decided last night was the night to begin the taming process.
Wallace didn't look too impressed at the sight of my hands in his cage at first, but I guess the call of the tiny chunk of apple between my fingers was a little too hard to ignore. So he marched up to me, screeched, took the apple and screeched again as he bumbled away.
After a few minutes of sitting in his bed munching, he came back over to me and sniffed my hands. I tried to hand him a pea, and this time he took it with no screeching and promptly dropped it. But he did have a nice munch of it later on.
I didn't want to push him too far, so after about ten minutes I withdrew. Over the last few days, he's been waiting until the room is silent before coming out, but tonight he stayed out while I was in the room. He is so fast!
Taking photos wasn't easy, but here are the few that didn't come out too blurry:
Here he is eating the pea after I dropped it into his bowl:
And here are a couple of him sitting on top of the house hes refuses to use(his bed is in the opposite corner under the platform):
He looks a lot bigger than he actually is in the latter two pictures.

Re: Wallace's Thread
Aww, he is absolutely gorgeous with his lovely ears! Congrats on making great progress on the first day of taming! Lol, who could ever refuse a bit of apple and a tiny pea? Great pics of your cutie! I love the last one especially; he is so focused on spying on you through the bars. Could he possibly be asking for more treats?

Re: Wallace's Thread
Congratulations Enerham on adopting Wallace, he's so gorgeous! He's in good hands with you, he's found his forever home. It really angers me when people get bored and give up on hammies.
Those ears are so beautiful!

Re: Wallace's Thread
Haha thanks everyone! His ears really are cute, aren't they? The dark grey of them contrasts perfectly with his fur.
Day 2 of taming was... interesting. No more screeching, so I think we're making progress, and I discovered he absolutely loves Spinach.
I've also discovered a couple more things about his personality. He likes to clean himself. A lot. He's designated his wicker tunnel as the main cleaning area, and he uses a sand bath! Never had a Syrian do that before, but it's the first thing Wallace does whenever he gets up.
So far, I've seen him clean himself for upwards of 20 minutes, and then again five minutes after he's finished. His cleanliness doesn't appear to extend to the cage, however, as there is a charming collection of droppings next to every place in the cage he's ever eaten.
He also likes to stretch. If you watch ErinsAnimals' channel, then he stretches like Iodine does. Just potters about, stretches, eats something, stretches and so on and so forth.
