Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
Finally after some wait i have bought such a cute Syrian. This may be a long post!
At the beginning i was leaning towards a male, but me and my 6year old instantly fell in love with this little girl! I bought her from Pets at Home. From their knowledge she is 8weeks of age. She was the youngest out of the 6 Syrians they had.
The staff member also mentioned she's one of the sociable ones compared to the rest.
I bought my own carrier, PAH put our hamster in their own box so she feels more safe in the dark and put it inside my carrier. Thankfully i took my carrier as little madam nibbled her way out! We knew we had to call her Nibbles!
Her nibbling was called for in my opinion as that's when i realised the staff member put the box upside down so the air vents were facing the bedding i had in the carrier! Poor thing was probably struggling to breath so nibbled out.
As soon as i put her inside the cage she spent around 2 minutes exploring the bottom floor, then went inside the house and slept for a good 3 hours.
So far she has used her wheel, used the tunnel, hoarded food in her cheeks and bee lined into her house, she has also taken some of the food from my finger through the cage gaps, she seems very interested when ever me or my 6yr old go nearby the cage. But im stopping myself from finger feeding her too much in case it gets in the way of taming.
I did notice she loves burrowing, she borrows in one corner and pops out from another end lol. Which made me realise i probably didn't put enough bedding in. When can i add more bedding? I dont want to scare her.
She also likes burrowing out of her house at the side most of the time instead of using the hole provided?...is this normal?
I have attached an image of her water bottle. Is this too far up for her? She has to access it by walking up the bridge. I haven't seen her drink out of it yet nor have i seen her climb on the bridge or the ramp to the platform. Should i make it lower?
Also her litter tray...i forgot to buy the chinchilla sand today, is it ok for me to use her bedding in there for now until i buy it?
I have outdoor sand for my 6yr olds sand pit. Brand new 5kg bag. Buts its been sitting outside for 2yrs in the bag, is that still ok to use?

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
Hello Nibbles
She looks lovely!
It shouldn't scare her if you just put a little more bedding in, you can try & do it when she's asleep.
Her water bottle looks ok, it's always difficult to be sure if it's the right height until you see them drinking but it should be fine.
It's perfectly ok to just put some bedding in the litter tray for the time being.
Play sand needs to be sterilised & dried in the oven, yours should be ok if you do that but I can never remember temperature or time for baking sand!

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
Thank you Cypher. I have looked up the baking instructions.
I have put more bedding in. But not too much. I dont want the bedding to pour out through the gaps. Hopefully she enjoys it.
When can i start cleaning the cage? For example, her house? Is it ok to see if shes eaten her food she took into the house, also to tidy and straighten things up.
How can i tell where shes done wee? I have the fitch bedding. Cant tell where there is urine for me to put into the litter tray.

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
It won't do any harm to have a look to see how much food she's eaten or if she's peed in the house, just make sure you don't startle her, just talk to her softly while you do it & keep any interventions to a minimum for now.
If she's taken food into her house then she may be making a hoard in there so she will still need more even if she hasn't eaten it.
It can take a while for them to settle on one place to pee, to begin with she may use several places so it could take a while to find, I wouldn't worry about it though, unless you find a noticeable wet patch just wait & see, don't disturb her too much hunting for it just for now.
Unless it's something like the water bottle or wheel that need straightening out I would just leave things be, generally hams don't like things too tidy
It's usually best not to do more than spot cleaning pee (when you find it!) for at least the first few weeks.

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
Congratulations. She looks lovely. Cheeky girl nibbling her travel box.
You can watch her when she wakes up.she is likely to wee soon after she wakes. Syrian hamsters often choose a corner as the pee area. It can take them a while to choose. Once she chooses you can remove some of the substrate/sand. Leave a little as the smell encourages them to keep going there to wee.

Thank you Cypher and CMB.
She has found the bottle. But instead of licking it she is putting the spout inside her mouth and grabbing on???
Is this normal?

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
They do that sometimes but as long as she's drinking & not chewing then it's ok.
If she does start chewing on it rather than drinking normally then you may have to switch to a bowl but she's probably fine.

Re: Meet Nibbles (plus advice needed)
Hello Nibbles and Nadia,
She looks lovely and already quite a character, you and your 6yr old are going to much fun with Nibbles I suspect, as things go let her be herself and find her feet they do seem to do that quite quickly mostly Ghost our Syrian was quite the opposite for ages before he calmed and became the cheeky fellow he is now, give Nibbles her time and space you won't regret it....

Aww, Nibbles is very adorable and lovely looking! I'm sure that you and your 6-year old daughter will have tons of fun with this little sweetie! I look forward to getting to know this darling ham and seeing more pics of her when she settles in more.
