Re: Maestro is here!
Good grief Ria, I really must be slow! I just bought him a new bowl as after 3 months the original one might have been leaking. It wasn’t as I watched him drink and saw the slopping over. I can use the other bowl on his Barney cage shelf on the other side of the cage as he goes there to pee in the barney house on the shelf.
Thanks - 2 bowls it is.

Re: Maestro is here!
It's been so long & I have a lot of catching up to do but I really wanted to say how sorry I am to see that your lovely Maestro has been having problems for a while now.I am glad to hear that he seems to be happy enough in himself, that's what matters most & I hope he continues that way for some time to come yet.

Re: Maestro is here!
Thank you so much cypher. How lovely to have you back posting again.
Maestro was 22 months old on Boxing Day and so will be 2 years old on 26th February.
The 2 bowls idea has worked very well - thanks Ria. Maestro welcomed back his old bowl with gusto even though it is on the opposite side of his cage. It helps that it is alongside the barney house on the shelf. This is now his favoured toilet area.
In every other way he is hamstering along, mobile and active. I will check his weight more regularly now but he is hungry and eating well so I don’t think he is doing badly right now.

Re: Maestro is here!
Thank you TL. I am keeping a close eye on him these days and he still has a teaspoon of veggie baby food every day as he got used to it in his medicine days.

Re: Maestro is here!
Happy 2nd Birthday to my beautiful boy Maestro!
At one point, I hardly dared hope that he would reach such a landmark day.
Since the last update he has done very well considering the problem with his drinking. I have carried on the same regime with two bowls for water, baby food and a slight increase in fresh veg. And gradually things have improved. The vet thought that if none of the treatments worked- and there were 4 in all over 3 months- then it may well have been psychological. Perhaps because it is winter and he is older and sleeping more, his drinking has very slowly but steadily reduced since Christmas. It peaked at 80mls daily but now it has halved to 40. His weight is steady at 175/4 gms. He is still eating well all round but there is clearly less strain on his kidneys as he does not need to pee as much.
So some seed treats this evening and a nibble pot. He is still mobile and moving well. Just keeping a watch on his left eye that can sometimes be a bit crusty and closed. He can sulk if he has it wiped clean though. So nothing unusual there for a ham!

Happy 2nd Birthday Maestro! So pleased he is doing well and things have improved. They do have a tendency to a crusty eye in old age.

Re: Maestro is here!
Thank you for your good wishes Serendipity and cypher. Unusually I saw him at breakfast time and he had his lunchtime broccoli leaf early. He does prefer the leaves and I usually deliver them to the end of his cork tunnel into his house so he can lunch in bed without much effort! I started doing it to try and give him moisture without him coming out for water. Now I am happy to continue the indulgence.
