Re: Maestro is here!
I hope the new treatment helps. A sort of diuretic possibly. The low potassium was probably the excess drinking. If it isn’t hormonal then as Souffle says, it could be an ageing/kidney problem even if the tests came back ok at the time.

Re: Maestro is here!
Thanks for the help and advice on this. Yes, I think the potassium is washed out in the drinking and other vitamins too. That is why I am adding hamster vitamins to his water.
The first dose went down in the baby food ok tonight so I don’t have to give it by mouth. Luckily he has eaten every dose of every medicine in the baby food except the antibiotics which I did not risk.

Re: Maestro is here!
So pleased to hear that Maestro is taking his new medication Prilactone OK. So hoping this helps your precious boy. Big hugs from Noah & I xxx

Re: Maestro is here!
Sadly nothing worked. 3 months of vet treatment and 4 courses of treatment have not made for any reduction in Maestro’s drinking. Now a steady 80 mls a day. Apart from peeing hugely, but not in his nest, he still seems happy enough and doing all he should. I am keeping a close eye on him to monitor his quality of life. But he is still a happy ham.

You've tried absolutely everything and as long as Maestro is still happily hamstering about there isn't much else you can do but enjoy your time together.
I'm in a similar situation with my diabetic dwarf and all we can do is monitor them and watch out for any signs of decline in their well being.

Re: Maestro is here!
Sorry to hear none of the meds worked. But good that he is still enjoying hamstering. When does he turn 2? He is doing very well apart from the drinking/peeing and at this age that might be normal now as he ages.

Re: Maestro is here!
I'm sorry that nothing is helping him. You've obviously tried many things to help him but it seems like there isn't anything you can do now except for enjoying your time with him.

Re: Maestro is here!
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Maestro has been drinking from a bowl ever since this started in earnest in September. This was in case his excess drinking was because of bottle chewing. He did appear to sometimes have the whole spout in his mouth for a moment. Maybe that was because he wanted to drink faster. Now he uses the bowl ok, laps some water and then pauses to wipe his paws around his mouth and then repeat.
The problem is that the bowl holds barely 40 mls. Refilling in the day is no problem. When his bowl was dry in the morning I tried filling it to the brim at night but the result was the water must have overflowed the lower part of the rim and slowly the granite slab of his house roof got soaked and wet his nest as he sleeps under it. Now I give him less at bedtime (mine!) and the bowl is dry by morning again. He must hear me refill it above him but does not come straight out.
Any thoughts on returning to the bottle? Then I can leave him with a little more overnight.

Re: Maestro is here!
Does Maestro live in a barred cage? If yes, you could attach a second bowl somewhere else in the cage away from his nest. P@h does one that lifts out from a holder and screws on to the bars.
