Thank you Serendipity and Ria. Maestro is still a laid back character and seems very content with life. Or at least his evening treats!

What a sweetheart. Happy half-birthday to Maestro! Do you have the granite tile in there to help keep him cool?

Thanks pinkpixie and Jenny.
Yes and no Jenny! The granite tile is one half of the roof of his 2 room Rodipet house. It is one of their choices on the website. I bought this house new for Maestro. My previous boy Mocho had the same house. I kept the granite tile when I threw away the house and that is now under Maestro's Silent runner wheel for stability. They are very good as the surface is slightly rough so helps the nails. I put his food and water up there so I know he goes on the tile. Clever boy though- Maestro moved his nest room from under the wooden roof ( darker room as further from the entrance, you can just see that under his food bowl ) to under the granite roof room during the hot weather this summer. I am intrigued to see if he moves back later on!

Since Maestro turned 18 months, I have been worried about him.
Maybe it started slowly, but there was then a rapid increase in his water drinking over about 3 weeks. I went to the Real London show last Saturday and had a chance to talk to his breeder who was there. As a result I phoned the vet on Monday morning but had to wait until yesterday for the appointment.
A general health check did not reveal any other problems. So it is likely to be his kidneys. He was prescribed antibiotics in case he has an infection. Not baytril as it has a bitter taste and they don't like it, but Marbocyl. After a week if the drinking has not decreased then I can stop the antibiotics. If it is having an effect on his drinking then I give a second week of them as an infection is the problem. It is not likely to be diabetes although I was given some sticks in case I can get a urine sample to test. Otherwise, plan B is a blood test to test his kidney function. So fingers crossed for my little boy.

This isn't uncommon in syrians around this age I'm afraid. The kidneys weaken and become less efficient as they age. We tend not to offer too much protein as this can put further strain on the kidneys. He will likely lose weight and condition but normally they live pretty comfortable lives until 2 or so which is a decent age for a hamster.

Thank you soufflé as that adds to what I have already learned. I rarely gave Maestro treats of egg or chicken etc and only when he was younger. His weight has gone down from a peak of 198/200 gms to 182 and the vet said that was not a concern yet.
I have been worried that if he fills himself up with water he will not feed properly. So I have been offering him some baby veggie food ( on a spoon after the medicine to say sorry), or porridge made more moist than before or a crushed and soaked selective science biscuit. Only a little and on rotation as he still needs to use his teeth and eat his proper food.
Would you advise carrying on with these little extras? They don't amount to that much.

Yes I would continue with a small amount of these foods. It may be worth adding a small animal multivitamin drop to the porridge. We often soak the science selective biscuits for oldies. Did he ever chew on the bottle spout? We have noticed that water bottle chewers seem to stress their kidneys more by processing too much water quickly and often end up with kidney problems when older. If they do it at all now we switch to a bowl right away. He's a decent weight though so is likely processing things well enough. They have to lose quite a large percentage of their nephrons to become very poorly and go in to kidney failure. Hope he stays well for you.
