Ria, I thought you would know about the issue with humans just as I did. It was the vet who explained that it is the same with any mammal. Cats and dogs could be helped but not hamsters. I switched Maestro to a bowl at souffle's suggestion. The hamster water bowl holds 40mls with hamster vitamins to help with nutrients now. This amount lasted 24 hours at first and gradually it was empty after 12 hours. I now add another 20 mls in the middle of the day. Yesterday, for the first time, there was actually a little left in the evening. Fingers crossed this continues. Until a few weeks ago he drank the standard Syrian amount of 5-10mls daily depending on how much moisture he had from fresh veggies. I knew this because I change his water daily and to a specific level in his classic water bottle and I checked consumption daily. That was how I spotted when drinking began to rise and then to a level beyond what might be expected in an older hamster.

This might sound silly but I am just wondering what would happen if you restrict his water level to a certain amount a day. Did you ask the vet about that?

It was discussed with the vet but not appropriate for such a small mammal.
I do try and restrict water a bit by filling it each evening and the bowl holds 40mls. It is dry by early to mid morning and it is too long to wait until evening feeding time. So I give 20mls in the late morning.
Bit disappointed tonight because all the water went today, when the last 3 nights there had been a little left. Thought we might have turned the corner.

Oh that is a shame when you hoped things were improving. Fingers crossed it settles again.

No better news on Maestro’s drinking I am sad to say. He has been on the medicine for Cushings but there has been no improvement at all. The dose was doubled to 2 drops after 2 weeks. I rang the vet yesterday to report on his condition. His weight is still falling and is now 175 approx from a maximum of 198 a year ago.
The decision is to switch him to the medicine for the rarer hormone condition the vet mentioned which is the alternative to the excessive cortisol which is now ruled out. I have to wait a couple of days for this medicine to be ordered in. This is the last treatable condition if there is an underlying physical cause.
Otherwise he is well enough if a little thinner. His pee area is much wetter as his kidneys are working overtime. I hope he is getting enough nourishment. Just worried about him.

Poor Maestro. I hope the next medicine works and that he is comfortable in himself.

I do hope the new medicine helps even if not completely. This morning he was climbing his bars at breakfast time to draw attention to his empty water bowl. Same as yesterday. It used to be lunchtime and then mid morning for his partial refill, so it’s getting worse.

Poor Maestro - he does sound like he is thirsty all the time. I wonder if this is an instinct to need to drink or actual thirst. If that makes sense. Maybe the same thing. It does sound like it is part of him ageing and his kidneys, if diabetes is ruled out. Did the vet say it would do any harm to let him drink more?

If it does turn out to be a psychological compulsion to drink, I will ask the vet for advice on what to do. Whether to try and limit it or just let him drink what he wants. The 60mls daily is now becoming nearer 70. Its a huge amount.
