Default Do you think he's a month old?

So at pet smart a came across this big guy in with smaller Syrian hamsters. They said he was at least a month old but he is so big and his brothers were tiny. What do you think?

He is absolutely gorgeous! Some hamsters do grow quite big. A fully grown hamster can weigh anything from 125 g to 250g or even more. I would think he is more than a month old though. But he could still be only 6 weeks old and that size.

Our last Syrian grew very big within the first 3 weeks. He was about 6 weeks old when we got him. So it is possibly your hamster may be more like 2 months old. Either way. He is a lovely chunky boy. What does he weigh? I had no idea hamsters could be big and even asked our pet shop if they were sure he was a hamster! Lol.

I haven't weighed him yet. I want him to settle in before I handled him but I am curious on how much he weighs. My other Syrian wiegh's 130g and my dwarf weighs 30gs. I didn't get him that first day but I couldn't stop thinking about him so I talked my husband into having another hamster in the house lol and we went and got him the next day. I had to order another large cage so for now he is in a ( before I new any better ) cage. It reminds me of a birdhouse cage, with two platforms but a 8.5 wheel fits in there. I know I'm going to definitely get a larger wheel for him if he's that big as a baby lol. I always worry the first week in getting a hamster, I'm afraid they'll get wet tail. before I got Bearie I had a long hair hamster who got wet tail and I felt guilty and sad. So right now I'm very worried and he has been on his wheel a lot even now, he needs to go to sleep. And our house is shaking like a earthquake because houses are being built up around us ( new housing addition) lol anyway sorry so long

Aww he is lovely...he does look more than 4 weeks though. Probably 6 weeks plus. I think he is a chocolate in colour though there are some mutations in the USA that we don't have in the UK so he may not be. He looks to be longhaired too.

Do you have a photo of the cage? If it's like a birdhouse cage I'm just wondering if it's a bit tall. When people talk about "big" cages it means the size of the floor area really (ie width and depth of the cage rather than height). And sometimes a very tall cage looks big but has fall risks. Although if it is a tall cage there are ways round the fall risks Just thought - before you move him in - because sometimes people have exchanged a cage or got a refund when finding out it's not ideal.

Don't know if you've heard of Zooplus but they have good cages for Hamsters - The Alaska, Barney and Alexander are popular and good for Syrians. Just to see what they look like.

Hamster Cages | great selection at zooplus

It must have been very upsetting having a hamster with wet tail. Sometimes they are already sick with it when you get them. Other times it can be brought on by stress. I shouldn't worry about the building noise outside too much, but don't overclean his cage out as that stresses them. If you have at least 3 to 4 inches of substrate in you can spot clean mainly and if you put a litter tray in the pee area Syrians tend to use it and then the cage tends to stay clean and dry so you won't need to do a clean for some time. Also cleaning things at different times helps it always have a familiar smell so reduces the stress. Rahter than cleaning everything at the same time. So for example, wheel one week, toys that need a clean a different week, substrate just spot clean mostly and empty a litter tray every 5 days or so. When you do change the substrate, try and replace some of the old clean substrate and sprinkle it on top so it still smells familiar. Full weekly cleans aren't necessary

Last thing - don't throw away their hoard. Unless it is pee'd on you can leave dry food hoards for quite a long time. If it is pee'd on and needs replacing then put new food back in exactly the same place. Likewise with their nest. I leave the nest alone unless it's pee'd in. Then if it is pee'd in I leave a bit of the old dry nest behind and put a new pile of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper out in a heap somewhere in the cage so they can rebuild it. Their nest and hoard are the two things they get most anxious about.

Sorry if you know all that already. Also fluffy bedding is bad and can cause digestive blockages and other things.

So I got a chance to measure my new hamster and he's 6 inch already, so was he really only 2 months old being that big? They had him in with others that looked tiny compared to him, and their coats were not the same. One was black the other was black and white short haired and they said they where from the same litter. He's chocolate fluffy haired boy. I looked up what can constitute a hamster to be considered long-haired and his hair isn't that long to be considered a long haired hamster. ( he would if he was a she though) but his hair is longer then short hair but shorter then long haired hamster, so I guess fluffy lol. He looked nothing like his so called brothers. I just really want to know if he'll get bigger then 6 inches or he is really already full grown and they had him in with babies, which would annoy me. We don't have anyone one here that breeds Syrian's because I would buy from them. I hate not knowing how old my hamsters are, the store people always give me random age that don't make sense.
