Inherit toys from a dwarf hamster?
Hi! I have a dwarf hamster but I would like to get a Syrian in the future and was wondering if I can use the same toys for the dwarf as for a Syrian (after washing and whatnot of course)? I get that a Syrian is much bigger but I cannot seem to find labels that says if the toys are for Syrian or dwarf. For example can a Syrian play with toilet rolls? Since my little Missy seems to have trouble fitting in them and she is tiny it feels like a Syrian would not fit. It feels really silly to ask since everyone says toilet rolls are the perfect toy for hamsters. Same goes for hideouts, I have seen pictures of people using the same toys for Syrians as I do for Missy but I keep thinking that the Syrian would be way too big to fit in those tiny spaces. How big should the opening be for a Syrian to fit?

Most dwarf size toys would be unsuitable for a Syrian hamster, some Syrians might chew toilet roll tubes & you can make toys out of toilet roll tubes but they wouldn't fit through them, openings for Syrians should be a minimum of 8cm I think.

Re: Inherit toys from a dwarf hamster?
A lot will depend on how big your Syrian is since I've known them vary quite a bit but on a whole, I'd say that the average toilet roll tube is going to be too small for the average sized adult Syrian. Some people find that if they split the tube lengthways then there is less risk of the hamster getting stuck.
It might be worth looking at toys aimed at rats or guinea pigs as most aimed at hamsters seem to be better suited to the dwarf species.

That makes perfect sense! I must have misunderstood the use of toilet rolls for Syrians and just did not get a hang of it. Thank you!
