Default Welcome to Jeeves!

A week ago I brought home a new Syrian baby boy! It was exactly 2 months to the day since Mocho went to the bridge.
He was born on 26th September and so was only 7 weeks and 3 days old on arrival. Now he is one whole week older. I have started him off in the Hamster Heaven cage. It is smaller than the Barney and so I thought that it was big enough for him to start off in.
He has been difficult to see much of since his initial exploration of his cage. So I have been patient. I did not want to introduce him without a photo. Finally, I coaxed him into a tube last night and into his playpen. He was tentative with exploration and only had a brief walk in his wheel for the first time. So that is not in the cage yet. But I did manage to get one photo of him in a corner but deliberately not face on. Then he actually took and ate some seeds from my hand without running away. So a little progress.

Soufflé, if you read this, would you mind trying to name his colour? He is SH and red eyed. His hobby breeder said that his parents are both chocolate. I think she said one or both are also Dom spot. All his siblings were chocolate. He was the last to get a home...aww... From looking around at hamster shows, she thinks he is mink???

Without more ado, let me introduce...JeevesIMG_0016.JPG

Ooh lovely to meet Jeeves A little bird told me you had a new arrival. He looks so sweet and small. I have no idea what his colour is, but it is lovely. Now he has been out in the playpen I am sure he will enjoy it more each time.

Congrats on your new little man Coco!
Jeeves looks very sweet & I do love his colour as well as his name
I'm so pleased for you that you have a new ham now & he's very lucky to have found you.
I'm sure he'll soon be getting braver, enjoying his playpen & getting out & about more in his cage.

Thank you so much for your lovely welcomes, CMB, Serendipity and cypher.
Jeeves would not be tempted out by cooing of sweet nothings and holding his first piece of broccoli by his house entrance. No way was he going to fall for that one and be taken out!
I did not want him to associate food/ treat time with always being taken out when he does not want it. Later I walked by the cage and he must have just come out and was investigating the broccoli in his new little Rodipet treat bowl- so he vanished! Ah well. Delivery vans have come with boxes of stuff to spoil a new baby ham and he doesn't want to know yet, at least not when he can be seen! Patience, patience....

Patience can be soooo hard sometimes but I'm sure it will pay off & he'll soon make the association between you & the nice treats that keep appearing in his cage

I am still fascinated by his colour. Yes they are easily alarmed as babies when you first get them, but I'm sure he appreciates you cooing and is getting to know you and will gain in confidence.

After another week he will be settled in his cage more. I am still in two minds about the business of "tricking" them into going into a tube Because they seem to behave differently out of the cage to in the cage. In the cage it's their territory but out of the cage they seem to forget they didn't want to come out and then have fun But I'm sure things will progress gradually.

It's reminding me that Newtie would get alarmed easily and hide at first. But once he got the hang of the wheel in the playpen he was clamouring at the cage door to come out. Once the wheel was in the cage he wasn't so bothered about coming out and I do lift him out or tempt him out these days.

I'm sure you'll get to know his little personality soon too. Newt was a bit maverick and very active as a baby, climbing and wrecking things!

Thanks Rads and SKB. The naming conversation with H was something like
Bertie?- Bertram- Wooster- Jeeves...perfect. So I must try calling him out with 'What ho... Jeeves!'
Serendipity and cypher, it is a fine balance between encouragement and patience!
Operation Jeeves is in full swing. His new Rodipet house is being plastikoted to get ready. It is the 2 room version. Mocho had 3 rooms but only filled the third with fitch. By sheer luck I had a shoe box exactly the same size as the house so he is in that for now. It is open plan inside of course so I am sure he will like the rooms. I kept the granite slab from Mocho's house and that is on top of the shoebox so he is used to that from the start.
I know he is out and about at night because his sand bath is in use, his potty also and last night selective science biscuits were scooped up from different places.
