Syrian in a meshed Guinea Pig cage?
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if I could house a Syrian in a Guinea Pig cage which will be meshed with half an inch mesh. The cage dimensions are 120cm by 60cm. I am a little worried as I don’t want it to excape and I am purchasing it quite young. I am purchasing it young because my local rescue was looking for people to adopt some hamsters from an accidental litter. When they become of age to be sold I am hoping to get one.
I just want to check if this would be appropriate for a Syrian and if the bar space will be too big.
Thank you!

You really need a cage with a bar spacing of 10-12mm ideally, you would be surprised on how small a gap a Hamster can get out through...

Re: Syrian in a meshed Guinea Pig cage?
The bar spacing will be too big so it would need meshing, which is no mean feat! If you want to mesh it I would suggest meshing it on the inside, being careful there are no sharp edges. Cable ties can be used to fasten the mesh. A canadian member suggested the inside meshing to ensure that the hamster can't get through the bars and get trapped between the bars and the mesh.
An alternative, which may be a lot easier - would be to make a bin cage. Are you in the Uk, US or elsewhere? We can suggest suitable bins. You cut out holes in the panels and mesh them.
If you're in the Uk another option could be to get a second hand hamster heaven off ebay or gumtree.

If you use mesh with small gaps then it could be ok. Try to use as few individual pieces of mesh as possible, as it would have less sharp bits and less to link togeather.
Eg a square/rectangle and then coming of each side of that another square/rectangle. This could then be bent into shape and joined at the corners.
Any doors would need cutting out and meshed separately.

I meshed a guinea pig cage for a past hamster. Never again. Ouch ouch ouch and sooooo fiddly.
I went online to zooplus and bought the barney cage. Would buy the plaza now (not from zooplus) but it wasnt out then.
