I tried the heat lamp for about an hour the other night, then turned it off afterwards. The thermometer I have is pretty acurate, as it matches the temp the thermostat reads when I have the thermometer out in the room. But I might buy a new one anyway to make sure. The heat lamp brought the temp up to mid 70's when I put the thermometer right under it, so I turned it off after that. He also has a very large cage so I was able to just put it on one end. I don't really know if using a heater in the room would be a good idea, since I have all carpeting in here and wouldn't want it to be a fire hazard. Does anyone know if maybe a heat emitter with an adjustable thermostat would work? That way at least the light wouldn't be bothersome.
I'm just trying to figure out the most effective method that would be safest for everyone at the same time. Also I wouldn't want to put anything under the cage anyway, especially since the stand is wood(or probably particle board)

I suggest a space heater, putting a blanket on it covering 3/4 of the cage, and/or placing ripped up toilet paper around where they sleep.

It really depends on the heater you get as to how safe it would be.High quality room heaters would automatically shut off if tipped over, and are pretty safe(even with carpeting).

Oil filled radiators are safe if you can get them, that's what I've always used if I need extra heat in the room, they're very economical too.
