Default Poor Ralph has broken both his bottom teeth

Evening all,
Just some advise please. Ralph, my long haired Syrian, broke one of his bottom teeth a few months ago, he has been managing to eat with one. I noticed this evening that he has now broken the other one, so both his bottom teeth are really short. He seems his normal self, and seems to be eating okay, but I just wondered if anyone thinks I should take him to the vet. I’m not sure there is much they could do but as a responsible pet owner, I feel I probably should. Opinions people please, thank you.

Do you know what he broke them on? Hamsters teeth continually grow unless permanently damaged but this means if they've broken they can grow back at a funny angle but also importantly, the top teeth have nothing to wear down against which can cause them problems so I think it's definitely something that needs keeping a close eye on - especially if he's done it before.

I think velma just about covered it, it is important to figure out how this has happened so you can prevent it happening again, keep a close eye on the top teeth in case they get too long & need to be clipped & watch his eating carefully too in case he starts to have problems.

Thank you for your advise, I have no idea what he broke them on, he has loads of stuff in his cage that he knaws on, it could of been anything. I weigh him regularly, so will keep an eye on what he eats and continue to weigh him to check he’s not lossing any weight. I’ll also keep an eye on his top teeth and get them clipped if needed. He looks like a gummy old man bless him.

I'm so sorry that Ralph has broken both of his bottom teeth. I hope that they grow back correctly and quickly and his top teeth don't begin to get overgrown in the meantime. Good luck with finding out what the culprit was.

How old is he? I'm guessing he's not that young (gummy old man ). If he's getting quite old they could be decayed or something. I think a vet visit sounds like a good idea too - unless he is really quite old and then he may be better just left in peace if he's managing to eat ok.

I'm not sure what a vet can do in this case? I mean fixing the bottom teeth? I'm not the vet so I don't know what exactly can a vet do, but I doubt the vet gonna fix the teeth.
I woudl suggest you to wait for his teeth to grow back again and give him some mushy and soft food as possible.

I am so sorry to hear that Ralph has broken both his bottom teeth - I experience a similar thing with my previous hamster Sherbet. I would only recommend taking him to the vets if the teeth look to be decayed or the top teeth are growing to long - as the vets will be unable to do anything. You might find this thread useful which I made and it includes different ways to help hamsters to eat even when missing teeth - Feeding Hamsters with Missing Teeth or Who Are Elderly

Thanks everyone. Ralph is only 10 months old, so not really old, he seems to be managing okay eating and his top teeth look okay, but how long is “too long”? Thanks SKB, I’ll check out the link.

I used to take my girl to the vets every 2 weeks to get her bottom teeth trimmed when she broke her top teeth (as she damaged the root of her top teeth so they never regrew to the proper length) as this was when her top teeth were getting very long. So I don't know how to tell when the top teeth are getting too long, but I used to find my girl started to struggle to eat both her wet and crushed food when her teeth were getting too long.
Is Ralph housed in a bar caged? - as I have heard before of hamsters breaking their teeth when chewing on the bars of their cages so was wondering whether if that may have caused Ralph to break his teeth.
