Re: Adopted syrian is social but afraid of hands!
Hi! Lucky Amber, finding you. 😊 We have had Dora for three months now and I’ve lost count of the hours I’ve spent with her... bathtub training, the. I’m a homemade play pen with her toys. She’s come on leaps and bounds in many ways: she will allow me and my hubby to stroke her (almost always except when she has PMT- fair enough!!) and will eat from our hands and clamber all over us. Her personality has come out a lot too and she’s a little sweetie; she will pop her head out to say hello if we are around... so I’m sure that with Amber, you can get the same outcome. I am still working on holding Dora; she isn’t keen but will tolerate it- grudgingly! For about 5 seconds, then will struggle. I don’t know if she will ever get over her hand phobia(she still avoids them if they’re outstretched without food!) But she is a happy little girl now, and I just transport her from her new big home to her run in a square tissue box, so it’s not too crucial. I do long for her to be able to be happy being held- mostly because she’s so cute I want to play with her 😁!- but also to health check her. So am still persevering.
Good luck with Amber- all I can say is lots of time and patience goes a long way! Well done for giving her a loving home at last.

Re: Adopted syrian is social but afraid of hands!
Aw that's great news! So glad to hear you have such patience and care for her - sounds like she's a very lucky ham!
I had Amber in the bath today for the first time, just for a little while. She seemed OK, and even clambered over my foot/leg a couple of times and had a good nosy round at the new strange surroundings! Doesn't seem as afraid of hands as much as I was told, but she's not comfortable with being touched/stroked just yet. Hopefully with some patience and perseverance she'll come round just like Dora - like you I want her to accept handling so I can health check her, especially as she's just recovered from a damaged eye, but it'll never be 100% 'normal' bless her. I love her anyway, my little pirate-ham

Re: Adopted syrian is social but afraid of hands!
Hi Sh4dow85. Yes, it’s been a slow process but Dora has come on miles. She’s not a fan of being picked up for long periods but I can now handle her, pick her up to check her over, stroke her and hand feed her. It took a long time and hands still aren’t her favourite thing but she tolerated them and is very cute: soon as I put her in her play pen she is climbing all over me and scent marking me as ‘hers’- so cute! So with lots of patience I’m sure Amber will learn that it’s all ok now. Don’t give in... it’s so worth it and I’m sure will happen for you.

Re: Adopted syrian is social but afraid of hands!
I just had to share this everyone... I’m so excited... tonight Dora stepped out of her home and let me carry her to her playpen!!! She’s suddenly got much tamer and is absolutely fine with being held!!! Hubby and I actually played with her on the sofa and she was scenting us, running herself on us and having fun exploring.
It’s taken 6 months but finally, our once traumatised little girl has taken a giant leap!!! 😍🤗😍
