Update on Kenny. The taming is coming on ok, slow progress still, but he is becoming a little less nervous. He doesn't like to held for too long so I'm just doing very short sessions with him and then just letting him run aboit freely when out of his cage. I say freely, I really mean in the bathroom where he can't disappear permanently. He did bar chew again last night unfortunately for about ten mins or so, he's founf another spot to chew on now! I gave him a huge dog biscuit and he has totally ignored it after an initial sniff. I might rub some peanut butter on it to make it more appealing to him?

Glad to hear Kenny is progressing well short taming sessions like you are doing are good. With new hams, I tend to do two 10-15 minute sessions in the taming box a day because they respond better to little and often.

Shame about the bar chewing. I have found that hamsters tend to bar chew most often when they are bored, either because their cage is too small (less than 80cm X 50cm X 50cm) or their wheel is too small (less than 12 inches in diameter) so that it is uncomfortable for them to run in it as much as they want to at night. Apologies if you have already mentioned this, but what cage and wheel does Kenny have?

The bar chewing could also just be a phase which he will grow out of. If he doesn't though, you may want to consider putting him in a tank as they can pull their teeth out on the bars.

I'm sure you have already, but it would be a good idea to check that dog biscuit is hamster safe. Most hamsters love to chew whimzees, which are hamster safe dog chews. I wouldn't give him any peanut butter unless you can find an all natural salt and sugar (and obviously sweetener) free one.

EDIT: Just seen you have the Hamster Heaven, which is a good size still not sure what Wheel he has though.

If the peanut butter is just peanuts, hamster safe oil,and has no added sugar or preservatives it could be a potential option. However,a lot of peanut butter has unhealthy additives(such as dextrose, maltodextrin, other artificial sweeteners or processed sugars, and can as with any food or treat include unsafe preservatives).

For safe ingredients for any product, just make sure there are no artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners or processed sugars(sucrose, dextrose, maltodextrin, fructose, sorb itol, etc),no unspecified biproducts(digest, derivatives, meat and bone meal of any sort, biproduct meal, vague liver or fat, etc),no propylene glycol,no sulfur dioxide,no artificial dyes,no BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin(known to cause cancer, also hidden in UK products under the E&C approved antioxidants/preservatives loophole, unspecified preservatives must also not be included),and nothing from China or that is irradiated. If it is a product you'll share with dogs or cats,it must not have any form of corn or wheat(including wheat relatives like spelt and wheat products like wheat germ,as while these are fine for hamsters they're awful for cats and dogs).

Oh I'll forget the peanut butter idea then as the one we have in the cupboard is unsuitable. The wheel he has at the moment is the one that came with the cage, I know he'll need a bigger one as he grows. I've had a few recommendations so I'm going to be getting one soon. Might have to get him a tank instead if he won't stop, although the Heaven cage was expensive! Argh! But he's worth it of course! 😁

In that case, I'd wait until he has had the larger wheel for a bit before changing to a tank. My last hamste bar chewed when he had a small wheel, but stopped the instant he got his 12 inch silent runner. That's the wheel I would recommend, by the way

I agree with the Silent Runner from AP. I use the 9in Silent Runner (yellow) for my Syrian but she's on the smaller size so this wheel size works great. If your hammy is a bit bigger in size then I'd invest in the 12 in Silent Runner (orange). That's the only colors they are available in right now

They do have a green Silent Runner in their "wide" size(if they're available in your country of course)but that's the only other color. It's the best wheel on the market, being completely safe and extremely durable(it can last through several hamsters,so even if it is a bit costly it's worth the initial investment).Other wheels are either less safe(often due to axles and open wire stands)or aren't true silent wheels that stay permanently silent,or in some cases combine those factors with being far less durable!

I didn't know that Amity that there is a wide size? Maybe for a hedge hog or a very large hamster?

Why would anyone want the wide wheel?! It would take up a ridiculous amount of cage space!
It sounds as though taming is going ok, slow & steady is always better than trying to rush anything.
Have you had a look at this thread for other ideas to distract him from bar chewing?
Managing Bar Chewers
Whimzees are probably the most popular chew so I'd definitely try those if you haven't already, a lot of hams enjoy Biscrok dog biscuits too, I know Amity doesn't approve but they are ham safe!
