Default Rescued 2 Syrian Hamsters.

Hi, my landlord found 2 Syrian Hamsters in one cage as the owner skipped town and left everything in the house. I have read where Syrian Hamsters like to be by themselves. So I ended up getting another cage for one. But for some reason they do like to be together. I sometimes let them run around in play pen together while I observe to make sure no fighting starts. Oh, and I finally came up with names for them. One is Rocko or Rocky cause he is strong and the other one I named Red because one of their eyes is red.

Hi, Evelyn.

Great that you've rescued these two! How could someone just leave them!! Well done.

Have you sexed them yet? Are you sure you have two males, or two females? If not, you could end up with a whole lot of pups very quickly!

And it's good that they're fine together in the playpen - probably means that they're siblings. But especially Syrians are solitary animals, and will fight to the death sometimes to protect their 'territory'

How interesting that they like to be together . I didn't know a hamster could have odd eye colours. Looking forward to seeing pictures. Aren't they lucky you found them?
Well done

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

Good for you for taking the hamsters in! It takes a kind person to do something like that.

Even if the pair seem like they "like each other" please do not let them meet anymore, even in a playpen. Syrians are solitary and will fight to the death once they mature into adults. The pair may still be young but once they reach maturity they will start fighting. And if they are opposite genders even short playpen meets can result in accidental litters.

If you have anymore questions just ask

Welcome to HC & well done for rescuing these two hams.

It may be that they're still very young or have adjusted somehow to their previous conditions & have been tolerating each other but now they have their own cages they will revert to normal solitary/territorial behaviour so I would definitely keep them apart all the time & not even let them meet up in the playpen.

It's wonderful that you've taken in Rocky and Red, after they were abandoned like that. I would just second what has already been said and urge that you do not allow them to meet any more in future. Hope to hear more about them!

I can't believe how the previous owns just left them, along with all their possessions? Sounds a little odd?

Hopefully they knew that the landlord would find them the next day. That terrible

I'm sure the hammys are happy you rescued them

No at this point and time, I still do not know what sex they are. They are separated in 2 different bins. I have read that Syrians will fight, but these 2 still get along so far. I usually do not let them together but maybe once a week or a little longer and I am watching the entire time.

Thank you.......

Okay, thanks for the info.

Not sure how to post picture, trying to see if this works.

No, I do not know their sex yet. But they are in 2 separate bins and no longer see each other.

I really do not know how long they were left in the house by themselves. Heard the person was running from the cops. But they are doing fine now.

I do not know how to insert picture here, but if you go to my Gallery you will see Red with 2 different colored eyes. The one that is red shows up as pink.
