Default All about Beatrix

IMG_3475-2.JPG

I'd like to introduce Beatrix! The "fancy teddy bear" hamster! A week ago, I adopted Emoji, a Russian dwarf hybrid, and I had no plans to add another species of hamster to my menagerie, but when I was at the store buying cat litter today, I came across this beauty. She was up for adoption, because she had been returned by her owner, and she'd been at the pet store for a month. She is very tame already, because the store employees just love her and have been handing her and playing with her a lot. She is thrilled with her huge bin cage, so much more space than she's ever had in her life. I had a Syrian, Algernon, when I was 12, and I adored him, so I am glad to have another one in my life, but it happened so out of the blue. I just couldn't leave her there, and the employees seemed so excited for her to have found a home.

I'll try to get better pictures of her later, but I was so excited to get her settled in (she'd nearly chewed through the box they sent her home in by the time we arrived!) that I didn't have time for many photos.

I have been studying up on dwarf hamsters, so now I need to do my research on Syrians!

Oh, and I wanted to ask what her coloring is called? It's hard to see in the photo, I know, but she's black on top with white paws and a white belly. So cute!

Beatrix is so friendly! She loves her wheel, though I've ordered her a bigger one, because I can tell she's going to outgrow this one soon. I actually kind of like that I can here her running on it. I like knowing what she's up to in the other room. I put a sand bath in her cage, and she was so happy she let out these little happy squeaks and was bruxing (sp?) as she dove in and cleaned herself off. It was adorable. She already comes up to see me when I come in the room, and she seems to want to be petted, as she rubs against me whenever my hand is in the cage. It's like she's trying to thank me for rescuing her from the pet shop! <3 I must say, I am quite smitten already.

You’re lucky, it sounds as though Beatrix trusts you very much already! I also know what you mean about the wheel. Ever since I got Mushu his silent runner, I have had to press my ear to the door if I want to know whether or not he is running without actually going in and switching on the lights and disturbing him.

By the way, that gingerbread man in her bowl is adorable. Did you make it, or is it a commercial treat?

Congrats! She sounds lovely

I think she would still be called black, pet shop black hams tend to have more white as far as I know.

It's so nice of you to adopt her!

I can't help about the coat, as I don't know anything about that, but she looks lovely anyway!

Thanks, everyone! She is such a cutie pie. She ran so much on her wheel last night, but I do need to find a bigger wheel that actually fits in her cage. This one is ok for now, but she's going to outgrow it quickly, I suspect.

The little gingerbread man is a Buddy Biscuit treat I found on the list of Diabetic-friendly dog treats. Both my hamsters love them (though I break them into pieces for Emoji the dwarf hamster) and the dogs love them too! Here's a link: https://www.chewy.com/buddy-biscuits...baked/dp/45690

12 inch silent runner wheels seem to be the best in terms of safety, durability, size and sound.
Silent Runner 12 Inch

Those gingerbread men sure are cute. Thanks for the link might try Mushu on one.
