Penny's Thread
Hi all,
I've not been on the forum in a long time and been hamster-less since I lost my robo, Valentine, a few months ago. I've missed having a Syrian since loosing Leonard last year, and finally welcomed another on Monday. I'd been looking out for rescues (and missed a PM from some one on here, I'm so sorry about that if you see this!) but ended up getting her from p@h adoption. Not the best place IMO but she needed a home, and something about her just made me chose her.
She was handled by the employee and I've had a quick hold of her, she's a bit skittish but seems friendly and very active! She's called Penny for now (to go with Leonard, most my small pets are named from TV shows!) but I'm not sure it suits and struggling to name her, so any suggestions are welcome! She's in the Kerry tank atm which used to house my gerbils, not sure how suitable it is really for a hamster. I think I'll have a look on Zooplus and chose a new cage from there. Here are a few pics, not very good quality!

Re: Penny's Thread
She is lovely. I have a soft spot for animals with red eyes.
I recently bought the alexander cage from zooplus and really love it.

Re: Penny's Thread
Thank you, me too! My Leonard had red eyes
That seems to be one of the best from my searching, I just worry with plastic bases after Leonard chewed through his one night!! But I quite like barred cages, she doesn't seem a chewer atm but hasn't really got any plastic (beside her wheel) in that she could chew!

Re: Penny's Thread
She's a very pretty colour. Is she mink banded? I'm no expert! If you're looking for good barred cages on Zooplus, there's the Alexander, the Alaska, the Barney. All good cages I have the Alaska myself, though it's not currently in use. I think chewing through bases is quite uncommon, so she'd probably be fine with a plastic base. My brother and I have had 7 hamsters, all kept in plastic based cages, and never had a hamster even try to chew through. So long as the cage is big enough and she has enough chew toys she will probably be fine. There are, if course, exceptions such as Leonard, but you say she's not a chewer so I'd give it a go.

Re: Penny's Thread
Hello and welcome back, and congrats on Penny! She's looking absolutely adorable in the photos. Like AP said, the Barney, Alexander, and Alaska would all make wonderful cages. I wouldn't worry yourself over chewing. I've only had one ham who was insistent upon chewing through plastic. Looking forward to updates

Re: Penny's Thread
Thank you all I'm not sure on her colour, but upon searching it looks like she may be mink banded
I think I'll get a plastic cage, I had a look online and saw an Alaska advertised a few streets away from me! The shelf is missing, I don't think this really matters though. It's for £10 under the price on zooplus.
She took some yogurt drop pieces from my hand yesterday and let me have a little stroke.
