I know it's easy to say but try not to worry too much or question anything you've done AP, all animals get stressed at times it's just part of life & not something that we can ever avoid entirely, I don't think you could have done anything differently or better for Quigley & I very much doubt that free roaming has anything to do with this tbh.
Now he's seen the vet & has the appropriate treatment I'm sure he'll be fine, it is stressful for them (& us) when you have to deal with something like this & clean everything but he will get over it, agree with Serendipity, lots of nice treats will work wonders!

Aww Quigley, poor you but well done for being so brave at the vets. As others have said try not to worry as I'm sure it's not happened because of anything you've done or not done It's good that you were able to take him to Mocho's vet, that should give you some confidence and reassurance

Get well soon Quigley xx

Thank you so much everybody for your kind words and reassurances.

I spent 2 hours yesterday evening doing a full clean out of Quigley’s cage (by the way, a massive thank you to Serendipity for all your help and advice). It got completely washed with pet safe disinfectant, as did all plastic toys. Everything which couldn’t be cleaned, such as his wooden house, bendy bridges, stuffed log, hemp mats and whimzees got replaced.

Quigley slept in his pet carrier for the full 2 hours and thankfully so far has shown no signs of upset at the cleaning. I think it helped that I put everything back in the same place.

Today, I start work cleaning his playpen and playpen toys and replacing anything which can’t be cleaned in there.

I do have a bit of good news. Before I took Quigley to the vet on Tuesday, I noticed what looked like the beginnings of hair follicles growing on his bald patch. But, they were so short that I couldn’t be sure. Today, they are longer so I really think that the fur is growing back and started to do so even before we went to the vets. So, perhaps all that flax seed and primrose oil has been working its magic!

AprilPearl, I'm so sorry that you and Quigley had to go through all of this. You are an amazing hammum so know that him getting mites has nothing to do with you and the care that you gave him. Sadly, sometimes these things just happen. I'm glad that he now has the medicine and is on his way to recovery. I'm also happy to hear that he showed no signs of being upset after the huge cleanup of his cage yesterday. Good luck with cleaning the playpen and toys today. I also am glad that Quigley's hair was growing back slightly even prior to the vet visit. Flax seeds and primrose oil must truly be magic! I'm sure he will grow his hair back completely in no time. Hugs to you! Please give your cuddly ham-man a cuddle from me.

Good to hear the hair appears to be growing back AP, poor Quigley will be feeling the breeze on his neck Get well soon Quigley. Glad you've got the cage all sorted AP. It puts me off wooden toys when things like this happen. I must admit I never thought about treating the ranch either.

Thank you dreamtree playpen and toys are all done so hopefully any lingering mites are gone.

BP lol that's one way of looking at it! He seems a bit surprised to feel me touching the skin on his neck, so I'm not sure he realised he had a bald patch.

The hair growing on his bald patch is even more evident today. I've been rubbing a little primrose oil into the skin as well as giving him a drop orally daily. That's meant to be good for hair loss in humans, so I thought it was worth a shot.

I am sorry to hear that Quigley bald patch was caused by mites. It's good that you could take him to such a good vet and he has received such good treatment. Lovely to hear that Quigley was well behaved at the vets and also that his fur is starting to regrow. Wishing Quigley a speedy recovery!

That was a lot of hard work AP. It won't take him long to settle again even in the playpen. Very good news that his fur is growing again. I have a little bag of brown (not golden) linseeds/ flaxseeds from the supermarket and I give some to Mocho in his food mix to help with his coat.

SKB Thank you very much! He was very brave and hopefully will not have to repeat the experience any time soon.

Coco Quigley has the brown linseeds too. Not actually sure what the difference is between golden and brown. Is one type better than the other? He seems a bit miffed that the playpen has changed but is surprisingly relaxed about the cage clean which is good. I think it’s because I managed to replace everything in his cage with either new or cleaned items arranged in the same places. His play pen is currently looking a little sparse as I have not been able to replace everything. Hopefully I can get some new toys soon and in the mean time he can make do with the new bendy brides I got him as well as the plastic things I was able to wash. His donut bed thankfully turned out to be machine washable so that did not have to go!

Yes they are machine washable Only problem I've found is if they get washed a few times they start disintegrating! Ideas for the playpen - a wellington boot on its side, a mug on its side, a waste paper bin on its side, a kitchen roll tube slit down the side (so it expands), a tissue box with some tissues sticking out.
