Default Say Hello to Chewy! <3

Everyone, meet Chewy! She is a golden banded Syrian who I brought home just yesterday. I'm guessing she's around 3 months old.

I currently have her in a ten gallon aquarium, which I know is too small. I'm working on a DIY bin cage to serve as an extension, but this is all temporary as I'm getting ready to move into a larger bedroom; once I'm settled there she will have a much larger habitat built for her in her own little corner. I'm also looking into getting her a larger wheel as this one is only 6 inches (15 cm). I used it for my previous dwarf hamsters but quickly realized it's a bit small for her.

Because I have a lot of experience with training dogs as a hobby and now as a future career, I think I'm going to try my hand at clicker training Chewy. Will see how that goes! (:

Quick question. I'm new here and realized I'm not able to include any links or images directly on the post. Why is this? I've attached a photo of Chewy instead.

Thanks for reading! <3

She's a real cutie She still has a baby face so I would put her at about 6-8 weeks. The baby face goes at around 10 weeks really.

She’s a cutie. Her face reminds me of my Quigley, who is a golden.

A good wheel is the 12 inch silent runner.

Never heard of clicker training a hamster! I am interested to see how it works out.

Hi & welcome to HC, Chewy is adorable

I've heard a couple of people talk about clicker training with hams before, hams are so different in nature & behaviour to dogs I really don't see it as appropriate, hams are much more fun being hams

Hi and welcome to HC, and congrats on getting your gorgeous Chewy! She is so lovely. I look forward to seeing more pics and hearing about your sweet hammy. Good luck with the click training. It works excellently for dogs and I would love to know how it works for Chewy, too. Good luck and please share updates on all of Chewy's progress. Eros waves to her new friend Chewy.

Hello and welcome to HC!

Chewy is a little cutie, I have a soft spot for golden Syrians. I wish you luck with clicker training, my assumption is that it will work just fine. Any animal really can respond to operant conditioning, but I'm not quite sure what tricks you'd teach with the clicker afterwards! Sometimes it's good to just let a hamster be a hamster with no tricks or training However, it's all your choice. Either way, good luck
