Default New hamster acting different

I brought my son a female Syrian hamster about a week ago. When we brought her home she was active and very curious about us. So after she had been home for 3 day I started to tame her at night by getting her to take food from my hand. After 2 night of that she stopped coming out of her house. She built a big nest under her house and now only comes out at night if it’s quit. She gets a little water and food and goes back to the nest. I’m really worried that she doesn’t like us. She was really responsive when I was giving her food from my hand. I was wondering if this could be a sign she is pregnant or was and just had the babies. She doesn’t really have apear shape and she is not drinking a lot of water. I’m really nervous because a week before we got her we had another hamster. She had babies a week after we got her and she died two days later. The pet store where we got he said she was only 5weeks old. I want to look in our new hamster nest to see if she did have babies but I don’t was to put stress on her if she is pregnant or nursing the babies now. What should I do?

If you suspect she has had babies then I would leave her a bit longer without any interference. Mums are pretty much in the nest all the time for the first 5 days then they start to relax a bit and spend a bit more time out. You can usually hear the pups when mum comes out. They sound like a sort of creaky door / baby bird chirp sort of noise. The pet shop does not sound very reliable at caring for pets. They should no be housing males and females together at all.
Treat her as if she was nursing and feed lots of extras that are high in protein and give her daily fresh veg. Wait it out for about 10 days and see if you start to see pups out the nest. Interfering could result in her culling the pups.
