Newt is grounded. One escape too many tonight. Back to the playpen.

"I am grounded. Last week I escaped under the bed in the spare room which had another cage underneath and zillions of interesting rubbish. I escaped for a good hour but someone put a roast chicken on the floor in the room and that tempted me to put my nose out from under the bed (where I thought I was secretly hidden) and I was picked up and put back in my cage - and didn't even get any chicken!

Tonight I escaped twice. The first time I jumped out of my cage door - luckily there was a nice soft cushion on the floor to land on. Later I escaped from the living room again. One minute I was sitting at Mum's feet. Then she looked away at the TV for a minute and I was off - I zoomed across the living room, climbed over the blockage in front of the door and went exploring. Mum had left the door open from the kitchen so I had 3 rooms to explore. I was exploring for ages. And then I got shut in the bathroom! I had been hiding in there. Mum thought she had searched for me in there already so shut the door so I couldn't get in there. But I was already in there! About an hour later Mum opened the door again and saw me chewing a plastic bag and I was picked up again and plonked on the sofa. I could smell chicken, cheese and cucumber in the other rooms but I never got any! I was plonked on the sofa and Mum said I was very naughty. Mum had just put her rice cake down on the sofa to pick me up - so I took her rice cake and ate it - it was too big to pouch but I had a good chew. I nearly jumped out of the cage door again when Mum put me back but she shut it again quickly.

Mum says I am amazing for an extremely old hamster and she doesn't know where I get the energy. I am getting very clever as I get older. I thought I was winning this adventure game but now I am grounded."

Newt after his extremely long adventure and stealing my rice cake!

Haha! Serves you right for depriving poor Newt of chicken.

He really gave me a scare last night! He is unbelievably fast for a 2 years and 2 months old hamster!

That dreaded moment when you realise that you have an escapee on your hands. What a nightmare hour for you. No wonder Newt was peckish and tucked into your rice cake. All that exercise and at his age too- still, you have to laugh but only when he safely back in his cage! He really is in fine fettle for his age.

..that Newt ate your rice cake i meant. Not knowing where your hamster is must be very worrying. I haven't had this experience, yet.

Ha ha - yes he just ate the nearest thing The smell of Roast chicken definitely helps bring them out though! Tonight he has exhausted me. Had a long time out of the cage - I blocked the door with an extra cushion and kept him in the living room. As soon as he was back in the cage he wanted to be out again so he went in the playpen this time so I could sit down and have a rest! Spent most of his time trying to work out how to get out but did run on his wheel a bit and sit in an upside down sputnik.

I had a check of his teeth tonight and I think he has lost his top ones. Either that or I just couldn't see them properly. I suppose that may be why he's been a bit frantic recently. But he seems to be eating ok.

Oh dear! Being short of teeth must be very annoying for someone like Newt who has been known to like his food. No wonder he was a bit frantic till he gets used to it i guess.

I'm so tempted to give Henry a shot at free roaming in the bike room with the door closed. He runs about on the futon and has been sniffing over the edge but i'm not 100% sure its hamster proof. He couldn't get out or down a hole and he couldn't electrocute himself, hmm.

Does Newt always follow the same path when free roaming or does he go different places?

Ria It definitely needs to be a hamsterproof room! Newt, until he was really quite old, was fairly timid and never ventured off the sofa. He just ran around on the sofa under cushions and blankets etc. He used to look at the height and back off. Maybe because he had usually had out of cage time in a playpen since being a baby so was conditioned to a restricted space? He got bolder as he got older. One day he climbed down the front of the sofa, upside down (Spiderman like) gripping on with his claws. He looked like a bat with its wings spread out. And got down to floor level. As he seemed quite slow we started letting him free roam in the living room after securely blocking off the odd dodgy area we didn't want him to go.

And that was fine, he pootled around slowly sniffing, grooming and I'd follow him round to make sure I knew where he was. He then got more confident - and faster. He knows the whole room now and runs around everywhere. One little place he goes between two lap trays to sit and wash. But he soon wanted out of that room! And would zoom into the kitchen. So we had to close the door to the room. He then found he could easily get under the door! (Bit of a gap). So we have to stuff a blanket there. He then runs along the blanket, climbs it at the end and gets through the gap at the side of the door (sliding door, it's a pain).

So if you can keep them in one room and it's thoroughly checked for any little gaps or holes (and they will disappear down a hole!). I think you need a room with solid floors. With wood floors there are often holes where central heating pipes go down under the floor from the side of the radiator.

So it isn't so bad if Newt gets out of the living room and into the kitchen - it's not that big - but if I haven't closed the door from the kitchen to the hall he can get everywhere! And that's what he did the other night. I suspect he went behind the bathpanel where there is a gap where the pipes go through, because I thoroughly searched the bathroom. After an hour and looking in there again he was sitting on the floor chewing a plastic bag.

So basically - they can be very fast and whizzy when they're young and it's probably safer to stick to a playpen unless the room is thoroughly hamsterproofed. And the floor checked and hoovered (they will pouch anything when free roaming!). But if it is hamsterproofed I think they thoroughly enjoy it and get more confident and plenty of exercise.

I wouldn't do it until a hamster is fully tamed or they may become untame.

Things you wouldn't think of - long curtains - they can climb up the curtains to the top and fall. Extension leads with plug sockets. Behind radiators if there are any holes in plasterboard. Double radiators where they can get up between them.

Our living room is fairly simple. There is an open built in cupboard I don't want him getting in as it's very old and the odd hole in the plasterboard, so that is blocked off.

And of course the obvious - peoples' feet. I have found the more Newt has free roamed, the faster and sneakier he has got!

Yes I need to check Newt's teeth again but I couldn't see any top ones and suspect they are missing. I also think he needs more enrichment in his cage. Since I had everything at ground level without the extra shelves and sputniks etc, there maybe isn't enough for him to do or enough variety as he is very active - but just not very safe at climbing.

So he will be getting some soft food and baby food as well as his hard food now. He does seem to manage to eat as he had quite a few bites out of a large strawberry last night. But he is pouching a lot more than usual and wondering if that is an anxiety thing because eating is more difficult. He doesn't appear to have lost any weight and is quite chunky really but will weigh him next time he's out.

Serendipity, thank you ever so much for your detailed reply which made me rethink. Especially when you said that they pouch everything. Our bike/guest room is full of motorcycle stuff, lots of plants in the lounge and the kitchen is a no go hamster zone, who knows what he could pouch.
I always assumed that hamsters only pouch food and never considered that aspect of free roaming. Phew! I had a narrow escape here, nevermind Henry.

Interesting when you said that Newt was timid when younger and grew bolder as he got older. He's amazing for a hamster of over 2.

I'd also supplement with soft food so he doesn't feel anxious when he can't chew something the way he used to or change the consistency of favourite foods to keep him happy. Do you think the back teeth are missing or are you talking about the two big front choppers?
