Newt is getting quite independent and very active in his older age. I kind of like this change in their personalities around this age. He seems less scared of things - more confidence - and the beginnings of "grumpy old man"

He is telling me who is boss regarding hoards and potties. Quite clearly he did not like having somehting that could be lifted out and removed (when he had decided to stash his favourite bits in his potty) so instead of me training him not to do that, he has removed the facility to remove it!

The other night we had quite a conversation through the bars where he stared me out, listened and then I got the back treatment where he walked into his house. This was in response to have his teeth checked a couple of nights before! He didn't like that!

Tonight he came out and pouched a lot of pumpkin seeds which kept him happy then went back to his cage to depouch then, as expected, wanted to be out again once he'd done his foraging and hoarding.

Lots of antics late at night. Firstly he nipped my finger! My own fault, I had just been eating brazil nuts and must have smelled like a brazil nut. I was still eating them so he ran up to my face and I had to so NO you are not going in there to get brazil nuts!

Brazil nuts rapidly swallowed and hands washed. It was quite late and Newt was super active on the sofa. He now has no fear of jumping off! Or rather climbing down upside down and dropping - so have to keep an eye on him. He ran up inside my sleeve and out the top then round the back of my neck and down inside my top! Eeek! Little claws sticking in me as he climbed down my back in an upside down mode then appeared back on the sofa and ran into a blanket so we had a moving blanket for a while!

Unfortunately, as I have no idea where he is peeing and it's getting whiffy I shall have to do some spot cleaning and he won't like that either! May put the other potty in supported on something so it can't be moved. He has lots of hoards I think and plenty of space for them in his house so hopefully he won't hoard special things in the potty again!

As a final treat I gave him a new whimzee toothbrush with some sunflower seeds stuck into it and he attacked it yanking the sunflower seeds out then picked up the whimzee and carried it to his nest. He loves his food!

lol! Newt really is quite a character & it definitely sounds as though he knows whose boss
The brazil nut episode made me laugh & him running around in your top! I miss that still.
Good luck with the potty arrangements & finding something that is acceptable to the boss

I seem to have lost track of time. Newt turned 18 months old on the 24th September - almost a month ago! Happy belated 18 month milestone Newtie. He doesn't seem to have slowed down at all and if anything is more active. His fur is looking a lot better too - he has daily linseeds.

I had to leave him alone for about a week while I was unwell and possibly infectious and last night he was literally climbing out of the cage door as I opened it. I think he thought he had been left as the house was quiet with me upstairs for a week! So he was very keen to be out and chasing around on the sofa. He has lost the fear of leaving the sofa now so I have to keep an eye on him. He doesn't jump off but climbs down upside down and then drops!

He also tried his old trick on me and nearly fooled me again. He has this trick. He gets a couple of extras each day as well as his food - a nut and something else. One goes on top of the ceramic pot and one on the wood dangly thing next to it. He always goes straight for those and pouches them. Once or twice I found him standing there indicating the empty ceramic lid and the empty dangly thing and thought i must have forgotten to put the treats out (do it on autopilot). So put more out. When he did that another time I thought the same thing again. So next day I consciously put them there, watched him take them and he then tried it on again, frantically indicating the dangly thing and looking at me as if to say - where is it?! Nothing there.

Anyway that's his little trick to get more treats and he tried it again last night but I'm not falling for it now Newt!

I do think hamsters are clever It's usually when it's been a half walnut on the dangly thing - he is clearly passionate about walnuts! He used to put them in his potty and pee on them (they went black and had to be chucked so that didn't go down well) - which they sometimes do with really special things! The idea being to make sure no-one steals it because it's pee'd on and smells of them. Such a pain when you need to empty the potty. This led to a showdown hence the potty has now disappeared and I can't empty it. One up to Newtie. Means I need to spot clean now though but at least maybe his walnuts are safe!

When he had a part clean out a while back I doctored his house removing a partition so he had a much bigger nesting area and more room for hoards in his nest, hoping he would stop hoarding in the potty. It kind of worked as he does hoard in his nest room now but obviously has different places for special things and by removing the potty (it's somewere on the bottom of the cage I think) he can now bury hoards where the potty was. No idea where he is peeing still.

It was a week-end for toilet investigations. Nugget had his sorted (on his thread) and I made another attempt to find Newt's potty and do some spot cleaning. Found the potty right at the bottom of the cage under the house and pushed along a bit. It seems he had carried on going down to it to pee while the substrate on top was used for hoarding - but all stinky. So tricky as I had to bin a fair bit of that hoard - although I know he has another one under his nest and his nest compartment was fine - didn't need to be touched.

Anyway it seems when the potty got a bit full he moved along under the house and peed near the bottom of the cage under the end compartment. Which explains why a huge mound of Fitch appeared at that side of the house where he had attempted to push the smelly substrate out.

So a fair bit of spot cleaning inside his house - had to take a lot of substrate out and replace it - but at least his nest area wasn't touched. As he had been hoarding in the potty prior to it disappearing and he seems to like hoarding there, I have tried moving the potty to the end compartment (ie where he moved his pee area to - or rather under that area). And see how it goes.

His fur is lovely and thick and soft again now after the mangy moulty patches in the summer. He's been having linseeds daily for weeks. So his coat is very nice again now. He is still adorable - varies between being quiet and not very active, and being very active and full of energy - and still very communicative.
