Re: Maisie's thread!
I'm devastated, Maisie just came out of her little coconut hideaway holding her left arm and paw really close to her body. She's not walking on it and stumbling all over the place when she walks.. Don't know what she could of done to it. Going to take her to the vets first thing in the morning

Awww poor Maisie, she may have had a fall and in which case it may be a broken leg.
Millie,
Have you a small cage that you can keep her in quietly with no heights to fall from at least that will reduce the possibility of further injury..
Pip is sending Hammy Hugs for the two of you.

I do have a smaller cage its the Pets at home 'Large' wire one, but I'm worried moving her into this would stress her out further? Especially as she'll be travelling to the vet tomorrow?

In which case make Masie's Alaska safe take out the wheel and make it one level so she doesn't hurt herself anymore.
Though I don't think moving her would stress her out put her substrate into it so it is her own smell etc..

Re: Maisie's thread!
Sorry to hear that Millie, good luck at the vet, I hope it's nothing too serious & she'll recover soon.
Good advice from Rads, I can understand you not wanting to stress her out but it will be important to make sure which ever cage she's in is totally safe for her, if her leg is brokent just lots of substrate & a nice comfy nest for a while.

Re: Maisie's thread!
Just a little update - Maisie has not broken her leg, its just sprained or something similar. The vet said it is very sore and she is in a lot of pain, so she prescribed anti-inflammatory medication that I have to syringe feed to Maisie for the next 5 days. I have modified her cage and taken out all of the heights, so the ledge, steps and hanging bridge, as well as her wheel! I have also added a nice thick layer of bedding for her She is still very active and stumbling around her cage lots, I can't help but feel like I could of prevented this from happening some way..
I gave her a Whimzee as a little treat and that went down really well! Woke up to all of the spikes on the crocodiles back gone! And in other news she is becoming more 'potty trained' as she has been using her little sand dish as a toilet! I hope she makes a speedy recovery, can't stand seeing my new baby in pain

Re: Maisie's thread!
I'm so sorry to hear about Maisie's injury!! But, I'm glad that it's not broken. Tell her to get well soon from me and a Mushu.
My Mushu has a cold, so I have been syringe feeding him meds since Friday. Not fun hope your Maisie's anti inflammatories taste better than his Baytril antibiotics for both your sakes! If she doesn't hate the taste, you could try getting her to take them mixed with baby food, porridge or wet cat food. Those methods unfortunately failed for me as Mushu could smell the Baytril a mile off, but if Maisie will take them that way it might be less stressful.
Oh and don't blame yourself. It is not your fault, and you did exactly the right thing taking her to the vets. She is lucky to have such a caring owner.

Re: Maisie's thread!
Sorry to hear about Maisie, but it's good news that it's not broken. Hopefully she will be more comfortable once the medicine gets in to her system. As AP says try not to blame yourself, sometimes these things just happen and you got her to the vet quickly.
Wishing Maisie a speedy recovery

Re: Maisie's thread!
Millie,
Good to hear the Maisie has broken her leg Im sure with your love and care she will make a speedy recovery.
As been said by others it is not your fault she has injured her self, though I would have a careful look around her cage and toys to make sure there isn't any where she could have caught her leg/paw and there fore caused the strain, but hamsters will be hamsters.
When we first had Pip she threw herself from her cage to the floor which was over a metre! She was fine but scared the willies out of me.
As a special treat try her with some soft cheese after she has had her meds.

Re: Maisie's thread!
Good to hear her leg isn't broken, she should make a full recovery soon & with the meds & temporary changes to her cage she should be comfortable for now too.
As the others have said don't feel bad about it, even with the best care accidents can & do happen.
