Question Are hamster leashes good to have/safe/would it cause them stress?

I have seen them all over the internet and thought they would be best for Syrians due to there size I also thought I could trade it off with the hamster ball and not bring him outside but to go around an open area in my house but I was just wandering since they don't seem super popular if there was a reason for it looking for opinions or any knowledge since I always wish my hamster best thx
: )

i think a playpen is better than a leash. The ones I have seen look easy to escape from.

I think hamsters are not as trainable/tolerant to use leashes unlike rats, rabbits, ferrets, dogs and cats.

Keep to playpens only.Leashes are very dangerous and would be extremely uncomfortable, not to mention dangerous if chewed as the material would not be digestible(the same issue with hammocks and such).

Hamster balls don't offer any real enrichment unlike a playpen, play bin,or using a dry and clean bath tub as a playpen. There are many issues to come from using hamster balls, like the inhibition of senses and dangerous gaps that would pose a risk to any species as they'd be able to rip toenails out among other things. In many situations they can even be considered cruel

There are lots of good DIY playpen ideas out there, including some inexpensive ones,so do have a look around

I definitely agree with what has been said above. Hamster owners have reported their poor little hamsters getting their ribs/spines crushed whilst in leashes. I've even heard horror stories of hamsters getting their leash tangled when their owners weren't looking and unfortunately passed due to strangulation Playpens all the way! They don't have to be super expensive either, and can be as customizable as you'd like. As mentioned above, there are some awesome DIY playpen ideas on here, here's a good one
Stylish playpen

If you don't want to make/buy one, you can simply use something like an empty bathtub or shower! Fill it with boxes and hideouts, hide treats all about, and offer chews and other items to keep them entertained. Good luck, if you have any other questions, please ask

I think that only dogs can safely have leads and i prefer a harness to a collar on a dog in case of neck injury.

Well done for doing your research first.

Have fun with the play pen.

I would never use a leash. At the very least, it would cause stress. At the worst, severe injury. Playpens are much better, but better still is allowing your hamster free range (supervised of course) in a hamster proofed room

I didnt even know they did leashes, I though that is what balls are for?

I even laughed at my wife when she said we should get Dennis-Sama a leash to take him for a walk!

I feel stupid now lol, i will tell her she was right, but we still wont get one

SuperPupp17, I definitely would not use a lease nor harness for any hammy (even a Syrian) due to the fact that it is extremely dangerous for them. It could even become life threatening due to strangulation and/or broken bones. It is also extremely stressful to a hammy and they can escape easily, as well. Although you may want to have them roam around with you in your home, this method of doing so is definitely not worth all of the terrible risks that may result. Instead, I would suggest a playpen, tub, or even free roaming in a completely hamster-proof room with extreme supervision. I am glad that you asked prior to doing this with your hammy. I can tell that you care deeply for your furball and only are trying to find other ways to have further enrichment and bonding experiences with him/her. However, I would definitely stay clear from using any restraints like these. Take care and have fun with your little friend.

I remember years ago getting a leash for my then hamster but, he didn't like it and I never used it again.

Curiously a couple of days ago I had seen on a youtube channel a hamster with a harness. It look very happy with it, so I researched a little bit more and apparently that's more common than I have thought because I could see a lot of videos with hammys with harnesses or leashes and even DIY tutorials, but most of them looked pretty freaked out, uncomfortable and trying to scape, so I thought that probably it wasn't going to be a good idea
