Ruby, he is adorable! No wonder you are so excited with him. Cute little face and he certainly knew what to do with that sand bath!

Eek! I love him! What a little cutie, his personality is shinning through and I'm off for a lie down as he's melted my heart.

I'm really struggling not to peek in on him. He's so fluffy and cute and I just want to play with him so bad!

Tonight we had roast chicken for dinner and on a whim I took a tiny little piece from inside the breast and put it in his food bowl. He wasn't anywhere in sight so I assumed he was sleeping. I walked away and went to the kitchen and then turned straight around to go back and take it out. I was second guessing myself thinking it wasn't a good idea to give him anything right now no matter how small as I'd just brought him home. I was literally gone 30 seconds but when I lifted the cover I have over the cage at the moment the little Fuzzbutt was sitting in his bowl with no chicken in sight! He literally must have smelled the chicken and gone running the moment I walked away

He froze a bit when he saw me so I slowly put the cover back over and let him be. I'm not really worried about the tiny piece of chicken bothering him but I need to be more careful. The seed mix I have for him is the senior golden hamster mix from Rodipet which is great but lower in protein than a growing hamster needs. So I'm very aware that I need to supplement his mix with extra protein. I have Science Selective pellets which he seems to really like (or at least they are missing from the bowl ) as well as freeze dried 100% chicken and duck cat treats. I also have mealworms but I'm expecting him not to like those as it's a bit hit and miss with Syrians. I need to introduce all these slowly though. It's so hard to be patient!

I imagine it must be very difficult to not play and cuddle with him all the time! Glad to hear he enjoyed the chicken treats, soon enough he should trust you enough to eat them in front of you. Most of my Syrians have loved mealworms with the exception of Spider Cider, but she was an odd little hamster

Bless him he's got a strong nose, I'm glad you put the chicken in, so appreciated by him, he could've ran away when you lifted the cover but, he didn't. I know how that feels about finding it hard being patient. lol at fuzzbutt!

The temptation to peek must be so great! Patience will pay off though.
I'm sure chicken has magical properties lol! Even the shyest newbie can't resist

Well tonight I caught him in his bowl again, I was going to refill it and there he was. He froze for a bit but I just stood there and chatted to him like the crazy hamster lady that I am and he went back to nomming and then toddled off to bed

At this point he still has the thin cover over 1 half of his cage which I think has helped him adjust but I'm wondering if I should take it down now or wait another day? I don't want him to get too used to having the covering and then get stressed when it gets removed

I was also debating with Hubby about getting a new wheel, specifically the Silent Runner. I got home today and Hubby had ordered it! I was asking Serendipity about the wheel and she kindly let me know that it was going to be too tall for the Detolf so in a bit of a pickle now. After discussing with Hubby though we have come up with a solution to raise the lid of the Detolf which I'm going to tackle this long weekend coming. I'm actually not that unhappy about it - the height of the Detolf is a bit of a pain in the you know what so I'm glad to be getting a bit of extra height to work with. And this is after promising Hubby blind I wouldn't be spending any more money on the hamster for awhile

Sounds like he's getting braver already Ruby
Could you not just fold back the cover so it gradually covers less of the cage & maybe then remove it altogether in a few days?

Sounds like a good plan to raise the lid of the detolf, I'm sure he'll love the silent runner & it will be well worth it, I'm sure hubby doesn't really mind you spending more on your little ham
