Default Introducing Cheese

Here is Cheese, my little man's hammy. He is settling in well and little man did manage to stroke him yesterday. He is desperate to hold him but I think that may take a bit of time as he has never been held/touched before.

He looks really sweet
I'm sure he'll settle soon enough.

It's hard to see from the photos but doesn't look as though you have that much substrate in the cage?
I would make it as deep as you can so he has something to dig & burrow in a bit.

There is about 2.5/3 inches of substrate, that should be enough shouldn't it?

Ideally you want a minimum of 15-20cms (6-8") in tank style cages they enjoy anything up to about 30cm.

All mine have houses with no bases on top of a huuuge pile of fitch bedding for burrowing. They all make good use of their fitch mountains to make deep tunnels where they stash food.

Your new hamster looks a real sweetie.

Cheese is so adorable, he looks so much like my little Duncan (pictured in my avatar) I love the name cheese as well, very unique lol. I agree with cypher, the more bedding you can offer, the better. 5 inches is the absolute bare minimum I'd recommend, granted your hamster isn't a burrower, but if they are 10 inches plus is really best. Enjoy spending time with little cheese, keep us updated on him

Sometimes a hamster won't burrow properly without very deep substrate, sometimes 12 inches or more being required 5 inches for a Syrian is still shallow. For a young Syrian you may get away with 6 inches, but you really want 8-12 inches at least for an adult Syrian to burrow properly.
