I've had both over the years, and I love both sexes. But, I do tend to find the males more laid back.

We've only had a boy - he was lovely. I think girls are fun too but they can apparently be a bit whiffy when on heat - although some people don't notice anything and some hamster don't really have a whiff. They all have their own personalities really. There is a general thought that boys can be a bit more laid back (or even lazy!) and girls can be more active and entertaining, but it comes down to personality and genetics really. Probably the hamster will choose you You will just see one, whether a boy or girl, that wants to come home with you. And if a girl is a bit whiffy occasionally there are ways of removing the whiff

I've had two girls and one boy before, and they've all been lovely. My first was a girl and she was quite docile, as was the boy I had. I currently have a girl and she's really feisty! She loves to explore and can be very fast. I think it can really depend on the individual. I haven't actually noticed a smell from either of the females I've had, but again I think that varies.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it, you'll probably know which hamster is right for you when you meet them

It doesn't really matter which you get. Males are more laid back than females and females have a stronger scent, but apart from that there isn't much difference. When you see the hamster you want you'll know. Also, if you can get to see individual personalities you can get a crazy one or a calm one of either sex, just choose once you see them. I've had both sexes over the years and loved them all equally.

I originally wanted a boy but ended up with a girl. I think we chose each other - I immediately fell in love with her colour and she was coming up the the glass where i had the carry case. When she started licking the window I knew I had to have that little personality in my home haha. She is very active and curious and does get a bit smelly every 4 days, but its outweighed by that little "butter wouldnt melt" face.

It's funny that you wanted a boy but ended up with a girl, as your Khaleesi looks just like my Ella, who I thought was a boy when I got her and turned out to be a girl. Funny how things work out.

I know, I noticed that the other day haha. Maybe she is a sister from another mister haha. I'd never seen a hamster her colour before but now I see them everywhere

Haha. My avatar isn't actually Ella though, it's Holly, my previous hamster. I can't change it as on my phone it always says it's too big, so I'll have to use my laptop. Ella and Khaleesi are nearly identical though, and Ella has huge ears. Probably twins.

I definitely prefer boys for several reasons. I have owned an even amount of both males and females so I do have experience with both genders, and though I used to prefer females, males have become my favorites. One reason I like males is that they don't smell as bad since they don't go into heat like females. I also like that males are less prone to certain infections like pyo and other uterine issues which can be a huge expense and heartbreak if they were to affect your female. There's also no chance that your ham is pregnant when you get them so no surprise litters I also in general feel that males are much calmer than females. All my females have been huge explorers and runners, but my males have been more laid-back (with the exception of Chance) and would much rather snuggle than run. However, this can be a con if you're looking for a super active hamster who likes to run all about and get into all kinds of adorable mischief. However, all in all, each hamster is different and gender in no way determines what your hamster will be like! Good luck choosing, make sure to post picture of your ham once you get him/her
