Syrians are a whole lot bigger Pippin our Syrian is approx. 210grams in weight I think dwarves are in the 45-65gram range, they can be feisty but brilliant and clever too..
You will need a good sized cage for a Syrian Pip lives in an Alaska cage which is pretty big but by no means the biggest.
I wish we could have another one to go with Pip I have seen one locally too, that has been in the pet shop place for sometime and has grown quite big he/she is a long haired black one and looks adorable.

I have 3 Russians and my roommate has a Syrian. In my experience, Syrians are more active and easier to handle (they're not as fast and nibbly) and they're better climbers. Minty (the Syrian) is at least 4 times the size of my smallest Russian Stephano so they need larger cages, wheels, and toys. The Alaska, Barney, and Alexander cages are all recommended for Syrians.

I think Syrian's have better eyesight too but I can't compare properly since two of my Russians are blind.

I haven't had dwarf hamsters, but as Rads says, Syrians are a lot bigger - they need bigger wheels, bigger houses and bigger toys. We had the Barney cage for our Syrian after upgrading him from an 80cm cage, and I think the Barney is a good size for a Syrian. It also means it's easier to fit their big stuff in! Although I did have a huge house in mine. The Barney also comes with a good house and shelf so you just need a wheel and toys then, and a 12" wheel fits in easily (11" is usually fine but if your Syrian grows large they can need a 12" sometimes).

Our Syrian was also very large at 225g. I think they are less fast than dwarves (although they can still be fast), but they are easier to handle possibly, when tamed. Some dwarf owners may disagree with that, and as I say I haven't had a dwarf hamster. I found ours was great to interact with - we had real communication "looks". He was a combination of indpendent and happy to snuggle on your knee sometimes (if he wasn't feeling too active at that moment). Nice size to hold in your hand

Everything that has already been said is very true. Overall cost-wise, Syrians are more pricey than dwarfies considering the fact that most of their items must be rat sized. They also in general require large cages, preferably 1,000 square inches or more. However, personality wise (though keep in mind that this is VERY dependent on each hamster's personality) Syrians tend to be much more tame. They are also easier to handle due to their large size and slower movements, while dwarfies tend to be very fast and slip all about with ease. When it comes to time out for exercise, Syrians are way easier to allow into a hamster proofed "free range" room, but this really wouldn't be so practical for a smaller species like say, a robo. Besides being better for handling and companionship (in general) they're also a lot less prone to issues like dwarf hamsters. For example, dwarf hamsters can commonly become cage aggressive, but this is a rare occurrence in Syrians. Most dwarf species are also prone to diabetes, but Syrians aren't. This doesn't mean you should load them up on poor foods, but you can be less stringent All in all, Syrians have always and will always be my favorites as I just think there's nothing that can outdo their adorable "teddy bear" look, and just how many different colors and coat types are available with them.

I have about every species of hamster cause I thought I was going to die from cancer. I like them all, I think it's easier to bond with a Syrian faster if you can hold yours. I have a cuddly rescue Syrian who I can give lengthy hugs to.

I like all the dwarf species too.

I can't compare that well as I've only ever had Syrian hamsters, but I've just always gone with Syrians because I like how easy to handle they can be when they're tame. Although they're slower than dwarves, I know they can still be very fast because my Winnie speeds around like a rocket sometimes. She is a little more docile when I first take her out of her cage, though. All the Syrians I've had before have tamed really well but obviously that depends a lot on the hamster, and I'm not the most experienced.
