I do live in nebraska and we have had a weird winter. It has been warmer then normal and we did have the Windows open this past week when it was about 70 and windy. Could it be that there was a draft and she has just gotton cold. During the winter months (november til now) I had a space heater runningbin my room. I have recently stoped using it excepted on nights where it gets below 30. The Windows are closed at night but could the be a factor.

I feel silly if that is what it is. I live on a farm and am use to large livestock.

I think if it had been the change of diet she would have had diarrhoea or something. It is possible that it's the change of diet, but as Souffle says it could also be Pyometra so it would be a good idea to take her to see a vet. Is there one nearby you? You need an exotic vet I think.

She did have a little soft stool but I thought that was normal for a diet change. No wet tail though

Hey guys I just want to give you a quick update. I talked to a vet and she thinks that you're probably just started going into hibernation due to the placement of her cage by a window period I gave her a small reptile heating pad that's only about 8 watts and also added some alfalfa hay and Timothy Hay to her bedding to keep her warmer and then we also moved her cage to an inside wall away from Windows and fans. I want to thank everybody for their help and if you have any more suggestions please feel free to let me know.

Hamsters don't hibernate though, they go into torpor which is very different.Hay is not a good idea for hamsters,as it is a very rough material and can end up causing injury plus it could mold whereas it would be far less likely to happen if you just used plain toilet roll.

Instead of a heating pad which is risky and only a temporary fix, heat the room. This is much safer, more controllable, more reliable, and you won't have to worry about having inappropriate temperatures like with the heating pad(which still won't eliminate the entire problem,as it only heats a portion of the cage compared to making an entire room a suitable temperature with some alternative).

If she was going into torpor then just keeping the room temperature high enough, around 20c should be adequate with lots of substrate & shredded tissue for nesting, a heat pad shouldn't be necessary & can cause overheating which can cause problems.

Hay is fine if you freeze it (in case of mites) & remove any sharp pieces but plain shredded toilet tissue is the best thing for nests.

Unhappy Re: Help. I don't know what is wrong with me girl.

Thank you everybody for all your advice I did ended up taking her to the vet. And they found out that even though she was not even a year old yet she had a mass in her uterus that they said she was too far gone to do anything about. So they gave me pain medicine and said just let her pass naturally. About three weeks ago I found her really not moving put her on my chest and within 4 hours she took her last breath.

I'm so sorry...
It sounds like you tried really hard to keep her alive, which means you were a great owner. I hope she has a good time at the rainbow bridge.
