Re: Peanut's Thread!
Hi Peanut! Gosh he's adorable!! (I'm assuming he's a boy as he said handsomeness lol) No one could ever think you were replacing Willow! Everyone grieves differently, and I have had times when I've got a new hamster straight away, and other times when I haven't. But welcome, little Peanut!

Re: Peanut's Thread!
Thank you all for your comments
Here's his post for today:
"Hello friends! In the past few days I've discovered that there's this big round thing in my cage, and my human says it's a wheel and I LOVE it! I was a little bit scared at first because it kept moving when I didn't want it to (grrrr!) but soon I started walking and then running and it was amazing! I've run on it all night every night and once (only once!!!) I fell asleep half in half out of it! Luckily I ran into my bed before the human could take a picture of me with this box thing she calls a camera
Note from Peanut's human: Yes he is a boy

Re: Peanut's Thread!
Sorry I haven't posted on his thread for a few days
Since I've had Peanut for about a week now and he seems to be settling in, I've started trying to tame him. Last night, when he was awake, I opened his cage door and put a sunflower seed between my thumb and forefinger and waited for him to approach me. When he did, he sniffed the treat and then zipped off into a corner and wouldn't come back out again. I tried again this morning and the same thing happened. So does he need more time? Am I being too forward? Or does he not have a lot of trust in humans? My past hamster, Willow, was from a pet shop, had had no handling but came round within about two weeks, but Peanut comes from the exact same environment and doesn't seem to be getting anywhere? I know this is the first time I tried and I can't expect much of him yet but he did look really, genuinely terrified of my hand

Re: Peanut's Thread!
He needs more time. You could put the treat/seed down then remove your hand slowly or not open the door and feed through the bars.

Thank you for the advice CMB, unfortunately he's in a tank-style cage so I can't feed him treats through the bars but I'll definitely try the idea of leaving the treat down

Re: Peanut's Thread!
Once the treat is put down. Move your hand to the end of the tank, but keep it inside the tank.
Does he react if your hand is on the outside of the tank.?

Re: Peanut's Thread!
No, if I'm sitting next to the tank or doing something near it he doesn't seem to notice me, I'm guessing it's just the fact that it's an unfamiliar object inside his cage.

Re: Peanut's Thread!
It probably is the something new in the cage. Hopefully he will learn to associate your hand with nice food.
Try different food. There may be something he can't resist coming to the hand to get to from you.
You could also use a long handled spoon with the seed/treat on the spoon. So your hand is further away.
If you have a play pen or safe area you could get him into a box, ball etc then let him explore that area and let him climb on you.

Re: Peanut's Thread!
Hi Peanut, I'm Pippin or Pip to my Friends, your cage looks nice with so many things in it I hope you like it there..
Don't worry about your pet human they are all like that they get freaked out by us not behaving how they think we should and they can't speak hamster either...!
I have mine quite well trained now but he does go off the rails every so often and that normally means he has cleaned out my cage just as I have just so he says I am a mucky girl but I don't think he really means it.
Get your human to scatter a few treats about your cage and have a few in her hand so you can tame her...
TTFN
Pip
