Yeahh! He is a little runaway. He usually prefers to stay in his cage, and when he comes out to the playpen, he's always trying to escape. He also always puts his cage upside down, every morning I have to arrange and clean all the mess. But he is so cute, so I forgive him hahaha.
Blacky says in the picture: Hi Pip! Have a nice day!!
Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
Romeo got a play pen now and figured out how to climb the vertical bars in 2 days
I'm so sad, I thought he would love it, but all he thinks about is escaping… hope blacky is doing better than Romeo

He looks like a beautiful hammie, have to catch up on this thread, how did he go from a glass tank to a barred cage? Other than it being bigger I also have a Chinese rescue hammy that has a tattered ear. I think it adds character too

Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
Juliebrei some playpens should be forbidden. For example, the trixie one (that's the one I have) for syrians is totally useless. I'm doing a lot of progress using the bed as a "playpen", I hope we can continue bonding. Yesterday he jumped into my hand to come out of the cage for the first time ever. I couldn't believe it.
Thank you Lizzy!
Cinnamon I haven't written about it yet, I have to update the thread and tell the "last episodes on Blacky's life" But basically he was on a small cage. I didn't know when I got it that it was too small (50x30), and when I knew it, I had to solve the problem. Long story short, a friend of mine, when he knew about it, offered me his aquarium, and now Blacky has a "Ham manor" (actually it's a standard size, but for my parents and friends it's too big and that's how everybody is calling it). I have to upload some photos of the upgrade. He also was having some chewing problems, I don't know if it was because the cage was small, or because he was calling for attention, or what, but I'm really happy with the change because now he can't do that either. At the beginning he seemed a little bit upset with the change but after two weeks I think that he's getting used to it and that he's starting to like his new home.
Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
i would like to be able to use the bed, but romeo will jump. he will see it as a free ticket out as soon as he discovers the edge. i wish i could just let him loose on the bed. that would be a lot easier.
Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
I personally use the bed for my hamster, and as long as you're there the whole time and have quick reflexes it is very good. However,it isn't the same as a playpen and it isn't for everyone.
Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
CB don't worry, I'm not having enough time to write about everything so It's ok to anticipate some things
Julie Blacky is obsessed with the edges of the bed too. Obviously I can't let him roam free. I have to constantly watch him, but I think that he enjoys the time on the bed. On the playpen he freezes and he doesn't do anything at all, but I think that he enjoys exploring on the bed. I also was afraid that he may jump and hurt himself so I put some pillows and cushions on the floor. Just in case. So far I didn't need them.
Here you can see him a couple of nights ago. I had to stop the video because he quickly jumped onto the pillow and I had to stop him with the recording hand.
Re: Blacky's Thread - The Black Spanish Syrian Hamster
I tried the bed with him now. He was frantic and running for the edge constantly. He didn't stop up for a second. Full speed constantly even when I picked him up he just try to get away constantly.
I just noticed that blacky isn't much bigger than Romeo. How much does he weigh? Romeo is still quite small with only 115 grams.
