You could make a lot of little houses of tissue paper, flour and water, like the ones Romeo just destroys instead of living in for him to hide in

CHAPTER TWO - THE FIRSTS SWEET WEEKS AS A ROOKIE

Two days after Blacky arrived home I started to talk to him and to give him treats. He always came to my hand, grabbed the treats and then went back to his nest. He made an open nest with tons of toilet paper and hay.

The firsts days we had a chew problem. I noticed that he was chewing the cage bars, but I solved the problem as soon as his new big wheel arrived and I put it on his cage (the one that came with the cage was ridiculously small, and I had to order one on line because I couldn’t find one big enough on physical stores).

He is really smart, and he learnt how to use the potty really quick. Well, let’s say that he’s very clean and he always pees in the same corner, so as soon as I put his potty on the corner where he was peeing, he self trained, and I didn’t have to do anything.

I also introduced him to new food. He’s a picky hamster, and usually he only likes things that he shouldn’t eat very often, as apple, sunflowers seeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts, spinach, banana… Healthy things as celery or boiled eggs are a nono for him. Thank god that at least he likes a good variety of foods and I can choose one or the other.

First time that he had broccoli

I never saw him around with daylight, but I heard him at night. He was (and is) very skittish. Five days after he arrived I started to use the play pen. When I heard him, I woke up, and I used the ham ball to transport him from his cage to the playpen. It was relatively easy to make him enter the ball. Then in the playpen I could tell that he was a little bit scared, because he was still most of the time. I think that he doesn’t like open spaces. I think that he prefers the bathtub rather than the playpen and maybe it’s because the bathtub is smaller. But sometimes I think that he simply would prefer to stay on his cage.

He roaming around.

I was worried because sometimes when he was on the playpen I checked his cage to spot clean, and I realized that his nest had strange stains. That was the first time that I posted here, asking what could it be. Serendipity and Cypher were really kind and they tried to calm me down saying me that it probably would be wee. Now that I know how peed toilet paper looks (one day I put him on the playpen too soon after he woke up and he peed on the floor, so I had to clean it with paper towels) I’m 99% that it wasn’t pee. Anyway I’m happy now because the stains disappeared soon after that. If I had to bet I would say that it was pus or some kind of discharge from his ears. I think that my poor little hammie was attacked at the pet store because his ears aren’t round, they have like bite holes , when I first noticed them after two days of being home I didn’t know that they weren’t normal, but now I’m certain that something like that happened to his ears. Maybe the wounds were fresh or not totally healed and that was what was causing the stains. And maybe that’s the reason why he is so mistrusted.

Here you can see his poor ears. Btw, I think that his nails are super long. What do you think?

I used his mix as treats (hazel hamster mix), and after a lot of efforts and “food bribes”, a week later he started to improve his behavior. He even started to crawl over my legs and my chest without luring him with food. I was soo happy. But the improvements were slow, and soon we would have a lot of set backs.

NEXT CHAPTER - CHANGES AND SET BACKS

Wow, his shape is so different from Romeo. The nails look a bit long to me. Maybe you could make this for him? https://youtu.be/eawRupSbuNs
I haven't found suitable materials yet, but I will make it if I find it. Did you manage to do a diy paper house for him yet?

He has a strange shape truth to be told. Overall, his nose is really thin, and he doesn't have chubby cheeks. Some people had asked me if he was a rat

I'had seen that video, but I was afraid that it could damage his feet (the soft part). I was thinking about going to the vet to trim his nails, but he doesn't like his carrier and I'm afraid that he's going to hate it, and with the new cage and all that stuff I think that he had enough stress for the time being.

Can you believe that I'm having problems fitting on his new cage all the things that I recently bought? Certainly the new cage is bigger, but I had a buyer rampage and now I don't know how to manage so many things When I organice what I already have, maybe I will give a try to the DIY paper house, because he would love to have more hide outs for sure.

Certain rocks, bricks, resin reptile items or fish items etc can work to trim nails.I wouldn't use anything else though other than clipping nails yourself or taking him to a vet who actually knows what they're doing,as a lot of other things can cause serious irritation to delicate paws

Things like sandpaper or nail files for example would be completely out of the question, since as mentioned they would cause serious irritation to paws.

A rock in his cage could be a solution too. You need to boil it first to sterilize it. I put it under his water bottle so he has to step on it.
I think if you just use really fine sandpaper it wont be a problem. It's the coarse kind that hurts as far as I remember

I wouldn't personally risk using any sandpaper,as it is all very rough.

Considering the nature of sandpaper it could be possible that it would remove layers of skin at a time, and if it were on an item that is used frequently(for example a wheel or a particularly loved tunnel)it could cause a serious injury.

His shape doesn't really look odd to me, his raggedy ears add character bless him! One of mine has a hole in one ear, I don't think it's that unusual for pet shop hams to have little healed injuries like that from sibling squabbles.

The safest thing for nails is to either trim them yourself or get the vet to do it, syrian hams nails don't usually grow that fast so once done it shouldn't need doing again for some time.
I have used very fine sand paper to line tubes or boxes but only for occasional use.

Thanks for your tips Julie, Amity and cypher.

Then, I'm going to put some rocks in his new set up but I'm going to plan a visit to the the vet too. I don't think I could do it, and I want to wait a couple of days to let him settle a little bit. I hope his nails can wait til the next week or so.

Cypher, I feel sorry for him, but as you said, his ears give him a lot of personality, and I could distinguish him between hundreds of hams easily thanks to it. I love him the way he is.
