I used some pet safe cage discinfectant on a cloth and wiped the insides - you could use hot water and a bit of washing up liquid - don't get the cloth to wet just damp - otherwise it may soak into the tube ruining it. It did leave a little smell initially but once I wiped it again it was fine.
I didn't do anything else to the tube apart from removing the bottom with a can opener and cutting the top edge of with a craft knife - left the inner and colour part on.
I followed the instructions that Scarlett Empress detailed in her thread - Setting up my Alexander cage. So I put more glue on the ends and little bits throughout the rest of the tube.
I've never used Elmers glue? Does it dry fast? As with hot glue it dries within minutes so prevents the string from moving - but you could try using pegs or clips to hold the string in place whilst it dries.

I have pet safe disinfectant so I will follow your advice.

Elmers glue, that I know of, is how in the US call regular white glue (the scholar non toxic kind of glue), because it's the brand that commercializes it. I couldn't remember how you call it. I used it to glue popsicles sticks together to attach them to my knuff shelve, but yes, it's a pain to wait for it to dry. I've never used hot glue, it sounds handy but I don't have any, so I'll probably use the white glue with clothes pegs.

Thanks for your tips!

It doesn't take too long to dry,but definitely try and prop things up especially if it isn't a very heavy object.Hot glue can be nice and dry faster, but it will never have the precision of Elmer's glue.

I love it too when you can see the joy in your hams face, when given a special treat.

I've just done the first pringles tube!! In the end I used white glue. I don't know If it's going to do the job, because it looked very brittle, but time will show us If it was enough to stick the sisal string and the tube together. I'm very happy with the result. I can't wait to show it to Blacky. And I already bought another bottle to make more

Quick Update - Weight and Cuteness
I weighed Pumpkin the yesterday as recently she felt heavier. Currently Pumpkin weighs 190g.
Its lovely to watch Pumpkin late at night in the cage - and it's extra sweet when she hears me and gets extra excited the she stares at me with the sweetest face I can never say no to - so we have some late night cuddles. Pumpkin also does some really funny things too - like the other night she was trying so hard to climb up her candycane garland until she realised that she couldn't - she is so lovely and funny to watch at night.

Pumpkin's mealworm eating face is the sweetest - they are still her favourite!

White glue should be strong enough to hold the sisal string to the tube. I'm sure Blacky will enjoy his new tunnel. These tunnels do look really good in person and look really good in the cage - I got a couple more tubes to cover with more sisal string to use in Pumpkin play bins.

I understand that 190 grs is a good weight even if she feels heavier. You're very lucky that you have an active hamster. Blacky usually don't let me enjoy his presence when lights are on. I envy you for that!

The pringles tube was a success, but he liked to chew the sisal string, so I don't know if he's going to last long. I used it at playtime. Maybe I'll do another one for his cage when I get the mesh to mesh the lid.

Pumpkin's so adorable and 190g is a good weight. Such a wonderful bond you both share.
The last time I gave Harvey a pringles tube he wasn't impressed as it was the one that's a third of the size of the original size. Because once I pop I find it hard to stop eating them and that's why I go for the smaller size lol!

I think Pumpkin is fully grown now - I think - and 190g is a good weight - it's only recently I noticed her filling out a bit more as she was always felt quite slender - and also be due to all those strong muscles in her arms which she uses to climb up my arm.
Hamsterita, good to hear your sisal covered Pringle tube was a success - at first Pumpkin has a few little nibble on the string when she was investigating them in her playpen but has since stopped now that they are in her cage. Pumpkin allows me to watch her at night as I have red lights on in the evening which don't seem to bother her - if I switch on white light she not impressed.
Thin Lizzy, I can imagine Harvey being unimpressed with the small Pringle tube. I understand what you mean about finding it hard to stop eating them - I try to limit myself which is hard.

A Grumpy Pumpkin to A Happy Pumpkin

Wednesday evening, I had to go out so unfortunately I missed Pumpkin's cuddle time in which she wasn't impressed about - which left me with a grumpy Pumpkin. She ignored me for a while and then decided to put me through tough interrogation - sniffing every millimetre of my hands - before accepting my reasoning - forgiving me. Pumpkin did get to enjoy a late night playtime - where she was so energetic that it was tiring me out just watching her - running around being her happy self. She even started scent marking me - which now means I'm a possession of Pumpkin's . It's so lovely to see that she missed her cuddle time obviously shows how much she enjoy having her this time with me out of her cage. Pumpkin also got to enjoy another late night playtime tonight along with her cuddle time - and when I put her back in her cage she sat there looking at me with the cutest expression saying "please can I come out!" - but after a little while I saw her starting to fall asleep which was so cute.
