Re: Meet Speedy!
So the vet visit went as well as any stressful event could. I was reassured by the fact there was another hamster brought into the waiting room while I was there, a winter white, and that little one seemed just as thrilled as Speedy.
I put a load of substrate and bedding from his house and then I added a little cucumber as well. He burrowed into it well enough, and I don't think the journey was too taxing on him.
I'd had this vet before. He examined Speedy and I now know that Speedy is male and seems healthy apart from his back leg issue.
Speedy hadn't bled since before 10:30 this morning, and he had somehow managed to clean the blood off of himself in that time. The vet couldn't see any evidence of injury and said that his abdomen felt fine, and there was no sign of any infection, either. At the moment all I have to do is monitor him.
As you'd expect he's very stressed out and I'm leaving him well alone for the next few hours at least. He tried to jump out of the vet's hands several times. I have a feeling I may have to work on his trust of me in the days to come, though he let me take him from the carrier to his house with no issues.

Re: Meet Speedy!
How annoying that it is still mysterious. But good news that Speedy seems fine. I'm sure he'll have settled and rebuilt his confidence in 2 or 3 days. Just distract him with bits of food Charlie was definitely jumpy and reclusive for a few days after his vet visit. But time helps And once they get the confidence to know everything's back to normal they settle again I guess. He just needs to be back in a normal routine for a few days. Fingers crossed no more bleeds, but how mysterious.

Re: Meet Speedy!
So pleased to hear there doesn't seem to be anything serious going on even if it is a bit of a mystery where the blood came from, really hope Speedy stays well & continues to thrive now, he's such a little fighter I think it would take a lot to stop him.
I'm sure he'll forgive you soon enough, they usually get over that kind of thing fairly quickly, a bit of porridge might just do it!

Re: Meet Speedy!
Thanks a lot for the support, everyone!
Yeah, the mysteriousness of this is really bugging me. But onwards and upwards. I'll tempt Speedy with a little food later and see where we go from there.
He's such a little fighter.

Re: Meet Speedy!
Glad to hear there don't seem to be any serious concerns, but frustrating to not know what the problem was! I have been thinking about him all afternoon.
I hope he gets his confidence back soon, poor little boy! It's not like you can give them a big hug and lots of reassurance for a vet visit, like you can for a dog!

Re: Meet Speedy!
Yeah, and certain dogs don't even respond to that. There was a terrified Jack Russell in the waiting room who didn't calm down no matter how many hugs he got from his owner. He was only there for a checkup before his owner went on holiday. Poor guy.
Speedy's sleeping his frustrations off at the moment. Hopefully a bit of porridge later cheers him up. He'll be settled back into his usual routine in no time.
I'm scouring viovet for more toys at the moment. I'm thinking more tunnels and houses.

Re: Meet Speedy!
Glad it went okay!
My hamster and mice love this toy - they love going in and out of the holes. Maybe it would be a good one for Speedy?

Re: Meet Speedy!
I guess if there was blood and no sign of a cut it either came from something like his feet or his mouth or from his wee (it would probably be more watered down if he had wee'd it) or his back passage. Someone on here found blood all over a wheel once and it was from the bottom of the feet (the wheel was splintery). Maybe diet-wise it would be best to keep him to simple things for a while in case something upset his gut possibly?

Re: Meet Speedy!
I'm he wondering if he managed to nip himself while having a clean especially if in his wobbly state he had a bit of a wobble at the time?
It certainly isn't out of the realms of possibility..
Oh as special treats you could try him on Melon and Avacado Pip loves these
