Under the sofa is a good place for a fold up playpen. Any gap between a wall and furniture can fit a playpen. Even a large playpen.

Homemade play pens are good too.

That's what I said! I'll work on persuading him!
Hamster cage still hasn't arrived, annoyingly it's now in oldbury which is about an 1 1/2 hour drive from here! Fingers crossed for Monday!

Alfie's cage arrived! I'm slowly setting it up but I can't finish it until he's awake later in to put in the old substrate from his cage and all his toys and wheel!

That looks so good! It would just be much easier and nicer to not have to sit in the bathroom for an hour every evening! And he could have longer out of his cage!

I've done this much, I want his wheel in the back left corner and his sandbath needs filling with the old sand, plus a few more of his toys

Looking good! You have lots of nice deep substrate in there and something to chew on while he's having a sand bath Which wheel is it? I'd be a bit concerned about the hanging ladder toy though. Hammies can get their feet caught in chains and end up hanging by a leg and ladders are better filled in rather than open rungs.

I think taming is a bit easier in the bath than a playpen. Maybe have half hour sessions instead of an hour

Not sure what else you have to put in there still but just wanted to say the hanging ladder toy thing could be a bit dangerous, the open rungs & chain can trap feet & it's very high up so a fall even on to substrate could be a problem. You would probably be better off getting a nice rat size cardboard tube & hanging that with ham safe string or pear clips & you'll have to think carefully & plan how Alfie will access it.
