Faolan's Thread
Hello!
We got our hamster, Faolan (3 months old), on Monday. We went back to Pets at Home after having a look at their selection of young Syrians at the weekend and ordering a (terrible) cage. However, when we went back they didn't have any of the hamsters left that we had originally seen. When the shop assistant brought the other cage out we had a selection of a few little hamsters, Faolan was the only black one and they were all friendly and confident.Because he was so little and black we decided that we had to have him! We took him home in his little travel case and popped him in.
Originally, we had decided on the name Ruari but after getting him the name didn't fit at all. We had a long look at lots of different names but eventually decided on Faolan Asra, which means "little wolf travels by night" and he certainly does lots of travelling by night.
The first cage we got was entirely inappropriate (which we realised after watching some youtube videos!). It was a small, modular cage which we bought because we thought the add-on's would make it more interesting for him. It had an external wheel which was horrifically noisy and Faolan decided that he wanted to keep storing food in it so it would rattle around all night (causing us many sleepless nights). After doing much more research, we decided to build a more appropriate bin cage for him. It's still a work in progress, but we have lots of ideas for improving it in the near future, and Faolan is much happier in his new home. Since doing more research, we've discovered a whole new world of DIY hamster products and super excited about making tonnes of toys and treats for Faolan.
We are really amazed by how quickly Faolan seems to have settled in, and at how confident he is! He has been entirely unfazed by all the moving around we have had to do these last few days, although we have tried to keep our distance as much as possible to cause as little stress as we can! He quite happily listens to us when we talk quietly to him, comes over to investigate whenever we have to move something around in the cage (he kept knocking the water bottle over for a while and disturbing everything with his enthusiastic digging), and likes to sit at the front of the cage to watch us in our room (he seems as curious about us as we are about him).
We look forward to posting many more updates as we start the taming process in a few days. For now here are the few pictures we have managed to take of him and his cage.

re: Faolan's Thread
Hello Feolan
My first ham was black & even though he was a dwarf I've always had a bit of a soft spot for all black hams since then, really look forward to seeing & hearing more about your lovely little guy.
I'm sure he'll soon be settling in well & making friends with you!

re: Faolan's Thread
We had to transfer Faolan into his DIY playpen today so that I could spot clean his cage a little bit which went surprisingly well. We just put his exercise ball in his cage which he was curious about but too nervous to investigate, and when he was comfortable with being inside of it we just transferred him into the playpen. Couldn't take any pics because, again, black hamster and low lighting in our room!
He seemed pretty happy running around a little bit and exploring our toys we have made for him. Whilst he's still small, I DIY'd an egg carton hide and seek box which he was popping in and out of, and I had painstakingly made him a toilet paper Halloween ghost which we've also now put in his cage to try and get him to sleep in it if he wants - if not makes a cool decoration for halloween!
He seems to be making good progress so far, but he's started being a little bit territorial with us having to put things/take things away from his cage if something goes wrong which he's only started doing in the past few days, although doesn't seem to display this behaviour if he's happily running in his wheel (which he's obsessed with and does nothing but run on it!)

Re: Faolan's Thread
I keep meaning to post the picture of the ghost but forget. Hopefully I'll remember tomorrow.
Haven't had much to update with as we've been trying to give him some space, but Faolan did something really strange that I thought id share.
Me and my partner (T) we're in our room and had been there for at least 2/3 hours at this point. I was playing a video game as I had been for the past hour on a low volume setting, and T was on the laptop. No one was making any noise nor doing anything they hadn't already been doing for a prolonged period of time, and Faolan was on his wheel.
All of a sudden I heard this almighty thump and a really loud squeak, and I looked up really startled to see that Faolan ha launched himself off of his wheel, halfway across the cage, and was standing there staring out of the cage... Not sure if he squeaked purposefully or upon landing.
I'm so baffled an unsure if it was a complete accident or if he was reacting to something (although I'm not sure what as literally nothing had happened...)

Re: Faolan's Thread
Sounds like he may have heard something or reacted to a sudden movement. If I walked into my room when I first got Nova she would jump and make a little noise. It used to make me jump too!

Re: Faolan's Thread
It really makes you jump doesn't it? I never thought something so small could make such noise
